The band was formed in 1988 by Billy Corgan and James Iha, with bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin joining shortly after. Despite going through many lineup changes, the current lineup is identical to the original, with the exception of Wretzky, who would end up leaving the band just before their initial breakup in 2000.
Disavowing the punk rock roots of many of their alt-rock contemporaries, they have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegazing, and, in later recordings, electronica. Corgan is the group's primary songwriter; his musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band's albums and songs, which have been described as "anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land".
The Smashing Pumpkins broke into the musical mainstream with their second album, 1993's Siamese Dream. The group built its audience with extensive touring and their 1995 follow-up, the double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. 1998's Adore would just barely miss out, peaking at number two. With 30 million albums sold worldwide, the Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s. However, internal fighting, drug use, and diminishing record sales led to a 2000 break-up.
In 2006, Corgan and Chamberlin reconvened to record a new Smashing Pumpkins album, Zeitgeist. After touring throughout 2007 and 2008 with a lineup including new guitarist Jeff Schroeder, Chamberlin left the band in early 2009. Later that year, Corgan began a new recording series with a rotating lineup of musicians entitled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, which encompassed the release of stand-alone singles, compilation EP releases, and two full albums that also fell under the project's scope—Oceania in 2012 and Monuments to an Elegy in 2014. Chamberlin and Iha officially rejoined the band in February 2018. The reunited lineup has released three albums so far—Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. in November 2018, Cyr in November 2020, and ATUM in 2023.

Finally, someone uploaded this jam....a jam I have literally not heard since 2012 when Eaphoria became too scratched and the I Pod had gotten jacked while staying in a hostel in a room you know the ones in Europe that have multiple beds and bunks well in Athens Greece I just so happened to share a room with a strange young fellow who seemed to only want to stay in bed all dazed instead of hitting up the awesome ruins that were literally rite above us (the Hostel was very very close to the Acropolis, which is beyond divine and an absolute you must see this before you die kind of epic place) so yeah I made the rookie mistake tossed the I Pod in my pouch took off my necklaces I woke up to find the I Pod gone (the fellow turned out to be a junkie who a week later got arrested for getting caught in the act of ripping someone else's valuables for the sheer and sole purpose of leafing and hitting up the streets finding a black market where he found a penchant for pawning stolen goods and using whatever wealth he could garnish and swipe to purchase a nice phat bag of brown rocks coming from the far away Eastern lands of Turkey and beyond) but the necklaces had been left alone which was nice but what was not so nice was losing a very nice I-Pod from the 2007 that had a lot of memory on it Sade memory was filled with millions of songs and it was one of the first iterations of the I Pod Blue Print to allow storage of pics and even short videos (!) plus I had uploaded onto the mainframe of the I Pod almost all of the Smashing Pumpkins albums which thankfully included Eaphoria which contained this long jam that I had come to love blasting it is a great way to multitask heck I wrote this nice little story out while the song ripped thru. Thank you kindly, fellow PumpkinHead, for going out of your way. It has been many a year trying to find in vain an uplink on YouTube that allows one to hear this jam...Peace and Blessings to all....PS: Best soloing and drumming part really and truly begins from the 9:03 onward...I love that guitar work, and Chambelin is so kinetic tight and on point, as always....

Why am I so Tired? We am I here again? I can't wake up my dead self. Why the hell am I so tired? I'm tired of me (scream). There is no rest for wiry eye no rest for dead lies. Why the hell am I so tired? I'm tired of you (scream). No peace to shut my eyes, no way to lay me down to sleep. Why am I so tired? I'm tired of me. (five minute solo) repeat the above mentioned lyrics. Hey I have written lyrics for this song.
