"The Grand Confusion" has met critical acclaim for it being an energetic album with many different tones, such as the progressive-esque title track, the fast-paced "Motherland" and the balladish "Goodbye".

The Grass
The Souls Lyrics

The walk to town is short but it's too hot
I will sell some old things in the pawnshop
And Mary Jane is high
I take a look around
I know where I can meet you in town
I'll get in trouble if they ever find usBeat old box of brass
You always get me right
You always bring a smile on me
I lose all sense of time when you're by my side
Lying on the grass
When I get to your door
The last remaining is gone but I'm longing on for more
I ask for you and they tell me that you're gone
They have to be wrong
I miss your taste so much
Reality is so dull when I lack your touch
I lose all sense of time when you're by my side
Lying on the grass
You carry me in your lap
You carried all the weight off my back
I lose all sense of time when you´re by my side
Lying on the grass
The song “The Grass” by The Soul is a melancholic song which tells a story of a person who indulges in the pleasures of smoking marijuana. In the first verse, he rolls one more joint and plans to sell some old items in the pawnshop. Even though he might get into trouble, he does not bother and prefers to smoke and take his time. The chorus talks about his longing for his partner in crime –Mary Jane- and how lying on the grass with her by his side without a care in the world brings joy to him. He loses track of time and can only hope to see her soon.
In the second verse, he decides to meet with Mary Jane in town but fears the consequences of being caught as they would be in trouble. The mention of the “beat old box of brass” is symbolic of the difficulties they may have encountered previously during their rendezvous. The chorus comes in again, and he expresses his appreciation for Mary Jane, as she always brings a smile to his face and helps him forget about the dull reality of life.
In the final verse, he reaches for Mary Jane’s comfort again but finds that she is not there, and he misses her taste so much. The last line talks about how Mary Jane carries his emotional burden and how he feels relaxed and free when she is by his side, lying on the grass. Overall, the song takes a critical look at the effects of drug use on people’s lives and how individuals cope with the pressure of life by escaping reality.
