I love that this was not spoken in English as it isn't the history of English-speaking people. It made me think more while reading what was being said. And yes, I did pause the video a few times to both reread the subtitles and to see the beautiful countryside and ruins. I learned a lot from this video. Thank you for adding it to this website. It was very enjoyable.

It must be in my DNA, but I swear I could easily learn Gaelic (or whatever the old Irish language is) just by watching videos like this. There must be many similarities to English.

Wonderful documentary, both visual and in terms of hearing the beautiful Gaelic language.

I am Dutch and as a child I was told at school about this episode where Spanish survivors of the Armada returning to the Spanish Netherlands were killed by Dutch ships. From the Dutch viewpoint, Holland was at war with Spain. Numerous massacres and cruelties had been committed by the Spanish in the Netherlands (as there were by the English in Ireland) and these survivors were on their way to rejoin the Spanish army, as confirmed by this documentary.

VIP correction: de Cuéllar’s death sentence had been revoked before they sunk (I’m sure they know this as it’s basically the first thing De Cuéllar’s letter discusses). It was revoked by the Judge Advocate, which is likely the reason he specifically included him when talking about the many men lost at sea during the storm that wrecked/sunk them off Ireland.

My wife's ancestry is from county Sligo and Connacht, where they were resident since time unknown. (O'Connor) My own ancestry is from the same area (Dougherty). they all had to come to england after the great famine, they hooked up with other irish from limerick and tipperary, the O'gradys, and the Ryans. In all our family history there is in each generation such a mix of blond-haired blue-eyed babys and dark-haired dark-eyed babies that it's almost certain that those spanish marooned after the armada had to have mixed well with the native irish. vive la différence😉!

The Western Atlantic, the Channel, North Sea, etc. were some dangerous waters in those days. I wonder what percentage of routine passages (e.g., a Cuellar’s trip from Antwerp to Spain) were lost. 5% or, less, more, etc.

FYI, Irish is the 3rd oldest written European language after Greek & Latin. At the rate that Irish Monks & Scholars 6th to 12th centuries brought civilisation to Europe after the Dark Ages, Irish should probably have dominated, not Latin. 'Without a Native Tongue, there is no Nation'!

I love that the Irish language is being preserved but, I don’t want to read a video. The reason I watch videos is so I don’t have to read. I like to do things and listen to documentaries in the background. I wish there was an option.

While I am sure you think it may add something to the content to have it narrated in Spanish and Gaelic...you are automatically eliminating those of us who like to listen while driving, working in the yard, etc. If I wanted to allocate time to sitting and watching something there are a lot of choices so, help your channel out. Don't over think it.

@@claudialor5417 This documentary was produced for and by the Irish language TV channel TG4. TG4 have a good track record of producing good quality historical documentaries, being an Irish language TV station their documentaries are all produced in Irish.
