I Coul Never
The Spinners Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you think you're mind's made up
'Cause he sold you a bill of goods
Now you think he's everything
Tend to fall for his lines, yes, you would

His standard of living, his social rating
Girl, there's nothing he can't afford
He made you think I ain't it
But when it's love, I can give you more

He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do
He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do, like I do, like I do

Diamond rings excite you
Expensive furs warm you through and through
But all of these put together
Can never thrill you as much as I do

Now he can make you a movie star
He can put your name up in lights
But these things do no good
When you need the loving at night

He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do
He don't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do

Diamond rings and all those things
Social rating ain't nothing, baby
Well, well, well, well

He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do
He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do

He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do

He won't love you, he can't love you
He'll never love you, baby like I do

Overall Meaning

The Spinners' song "He'll Never Love You Like I Do" speaks about the internal conflict that a woman feels when she meets a man who is wealthy and can provide her with many things, but lacks the ability to truly love her. The song starts with the woman thinking she's made up her mind about the wealthy man being everything, even though he has only sold her a bill of goods. The song stresses that the man's wealth should not be an indicator of his ability to love, but rather love should be measured by how much one is willing to sacrifice and give for the other person. The singer emphasizes the idea that the wealthy man can buy her things like diamond rings and expensive furs, but those things cannot measure up to the depth of love and companionship that the singer promises to provide.

The song highlights how we tend to measure happiness by material possessions, status, and wealth rather than true love, companionship, and emotional support. The lyrics reveal how the wealthy man is all about monetary value, social class, and fame, while the singer is all about giving true love, affection, and care. Diamond rings, expensive furs, and a high social rating cannot replace a loving and committed relationship.

I would like to add a more current comment.
I was recently in the hospital
My wife has truly been my rock, staying in complete touch with my doctor and nurses about my care
There is no way on God's good earth that I could even begin to repay her love, kindness and concern for me and my wellbeing.
We are working on 28 years of marriage and I must say that each year our bond grows stronger and tighter,
Honeybun, you have and will always be the only one for me,
I truly love and appreciate everything about you,
Your Ever Lovin' Husband,
Duval

Okay, one admits ... t'is long overdue !!! Let's talk about these gents whom Uncle hast personally re-labelled 'The Weddingers' in light of how a lot of their songs resonate with mine own personal preference of what at least some people PREFER to walk down the aisle or await at the end of it to (Uncle prefereth to await at the end of the aisle, just so ye knoweth !!!) ... I LOVE YOU AND I WANT TO SHARE THE REST OF MY LIFE THAT WOULD BE INCOMPLETE WITHOUT THEE IN IT ... is basically what these five gorgeous-yet-grounded-gents (notice the three 'Gs' that actually represent the actual five of the 'Gs'-slash-gents !!!) communicate to us in the bulk of their songs ... ...

Gentlemen, though of an era of a not so immediate past ... ye resonate with what timelessly still exists unto this day and remind us of what love really is as opposed to its perks, benefits and how 'you must revolve around me' ... or vice versa ... or ... 'then it was exciting, but now I am just plain bored, baby' ... 'baby, let us both just move on' ... !!!

No, most of thy songs are bigger than those fleeting, fickle, self-capitalising, silly and immature perspectives !!! Truly.

And unto Henry, Mr Farnborough (one deemed worthy of being Berry Gordy's mother's personal chauffer in his reliability and nice guy-ness, though he himself might blush to think that he was seen in this light) ... Dear last surviving member and hence custodian of the original group that once was but no longer is ... blessings, beauty and boldness unto thee for keeping it all alive ... and the admittance and reassurance that if I were seeking one 'deserving' of driving mine own mother-and-matriarch-and-mother around, I would undoubtedly arrive at the same conclusion as Berry Gordy and hire .... a "GENTLEMAN" !!! Oh yes.

Dear Henry and Spinners, WE LOVETH THEE !!! "YESSIR", BABIES, WE DO !!! WHETHER OR NOT IT IS NINETEEN SEVENTY SOMETHING OR TWO THOUSAND OR THREE THOUSAND OR FOUR THOUSAND AND SOMETHING ETC ETC !!! A TIMELESS PORTRAYAL OF AN ETERNAL EMOTION CAN NEVER BE BEATEN DESPITE ALL TECHNOLOGICAL AND SOFTWARE ADVANCEMENTS !!! YE PROVE THIS AS A VOCAL QUINTET !!! UNCLE'S LOVE AND RESPECT ONCE AGAIN, DEAR GENTS !!!

Much appreciation also goes to publisher 'Dustyologist II' !!!

One of the great Spinners songs that the general public hasn't heard. Philippe Wynne ranks in the pantheon of great soul singers.
