The Truth
The Squeeze Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So what friend can I be
But still you stick through thick and thin
Hoping that you'll change me
I towed the line then fell behind
Our love began to wane
The pressure grew and then I knew
That things were not the same
It's the toughest thing to explain
The truth
Playing tricks with me again
When the truth has to be told
My blood runs hot and cold
The truth is not my middle name
You threw a rope attached with hope
Way down into the sea
Where lovers swim so deep within
The tides of mystery
For what it's worth I don't deserve
A girl as strong as you
You're worth much more than me I'm sure
Accept this as the truth
The lyrics to The Squeeze's song "The Truth" convey a sense of guilt and remorse from the singer, who admits to lying and cheating in their relationship. The singer acknowledges that their actions make it difficult for them to be a true friend or partner. Despite their shortcomings, the singer expresses gratitude for their partner's loyalty and unwavering support, even in the face of their mistakes. The line "Hoping that you'll change me" suggests that the partner still holds onto the belief that the singer can become a better person.
The lyrics also touch on the deterioration of the relationship over time. The singer describes how they initially adhered to the expectations and responsibilities of the relationship but gradually fell behind, causing their love to wane. The mounting pressure eventually led them to realize that things were no longer the same. This reinforces the notion that the singer's actions have had a negative impact on their relationship, contributing to its decline.
The chorus emphasizes the difficulty of conveying the truth and the internal struggle the singer faces. The truth is described as playing tricks on them, suggesting that it is not a straightforward or easy thing to confront. When the truth must be revealed, the singer experiences conflicting emotions, symbolized by their blood running hot and cold. This highlights the internal turmoil and fear associated with revealing the truth.
In the final verse, the lyrics shift to the partner who is depicted as throwing a rope of hope into the depths of the sea where the mysteries of love lie. Despite the singer's faults, the partner continues to support and believe in them. The singer acknowledges their partner's strength and expresses the belief that they deserve someone better. This can be seen as a way for the singer to protect their partner from further hurt, accepting the truth that they are fundamentally flawed.
Overall, "The Truth" by The Squeeze explores themes of guilt, remorse, and the complexity of relationships. It delves into the struggle of facing the truth, the impact of one's actions on a relationship, and the enduring loyalty of a partner even in the face of betrayal.

I was a big Squeeze fan when this album came out in the early 90's. After I listened to "Play" I was even more of a fan of theirs. Song for song, it's an excellent piece of work. One of their best albums.

'Play' is actually my favourite Squeeze album. Apart from 'Dogs' every track is as polished and gutsy as this one. Great work with this vid, appreciate it very much

Why doesn't anyone seem to like 'Dogs'? I think it's one of the best on the album. Great story, great chord progression and performed with some real energy.
