1) a three-member folk-rock band from the UK.
Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor have been making music together since they were children, growing up in Watford, UK, England. Brought up in a house that echoed to the sounds of Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Beatles, singing in perfect 3-part harmony came naturally to these three sisters.Having started gigging in local pubs and cafes, The Staves are now captivating audiences on much bigger stages - earning rapturous encores with their exquisite songs of love & longing. Guaranteed to give you goosebumps, their extraordinary intertwining voices melt the most cynical of hearts. The Staves' Mexico EP will be released later this year via Atlantic Records.

2) a baroque pop band from NYC.
"Simple, yet intellectually challenging. Gloomy, yet beautiful. Artistically sophisticated, yet starkly presented...." (Indie-music.com)
"There are very few artists that consistently give me goosebumps. New York's Soren Anders [of The Staves] positively fits within this elite category. Over the last year, his stunning vocals and heartbreakingly beautiful melodies have won me over in a major way...." (The Music Slut Blog)

Devotion
The Staves Lyrics

No matter where I go
There's a future I can't know
And how should I know
(Ha, ha, ha, ha)
Now it seems you want to love me
At a future facing down
And where will I go?
(Ha, ha, ha, ha)
And you're telling me I'm grown
How sweet
Life in the backseat
And its happening again
And its happening again
And you're carrying me home
How sweet
Life in the backseat
And its happening again
And its happening again
Devotion be the death of me
Well, I could blow the fucking windows out
Leave them dragging down the road
Your affliction isn't mine to hold
And how should I know how to?
(Ha, ha, ha, ha)
And you're telling me I'm grown
How sweet
Life in the backseat
And its happening again
And its happening again
And you're carrying me home
How sweet
Life in the backseat
And its happening again
And its happening again
Devotion be the death of me
Don't you deal me no favors
Don't you sell me no line
I'll call you back when I'm sober
Or at some other time
Well, I'm right here beside you
But its never alright
And I'm no winner
I'm no winner
I'm no winner
I'm no winner
Blazing and strong
I've been awake too long
And you're telling me I'm grown
How sweet
Life in the backseat
And its happening again
And its happening again
And you're carrying me home
How sweet
Life in the backseat
And its happening again
And its happening again
Devotion be the death of me
Devotion be the death of me
Devotion be the death of me
The lyrics of The Staves's song "Devotion" convey a tumultuous emotional journey, filled with themes of love, uncertainty, and self-realization. The singer grapples with conflicting feelings of being both desired and rejected, creating a sense of emotional unease and confusion. The repeated phrases and laughter in parentheses suggest a mix of resignation and defiance in the face of these complex emotions.
The first verse introduces a sense of being hurt and kept in the dark about the future, highlighting the singer's feelings of vulnerability and confusion. The second verse shifts to a longing for love and acceptance, but with an undercurrent of impending change and uncertainty. The laughter interspersed throughout these verses adds a layer of irony and ambivalence to the emotions being expressed.
The chorus repeatedly underscores the idea of devotion as potentially leading to the singer's downfall, hinting at the destructive nature of intense attachment and emotional investment. The imagery of blowing out windows and leaving them dragging down the road suggests a desire to break free from constraints and the burden of someone else's afflictions, while also expressing a sense of powerlessness and indecision.
The bridge brings a shift in tone, with the singer rejecting false comforts and refusing to be deceived by empty promises. The refusal of favors, combined with the acknowledgment of being no winner and the declaration of being awake too long, conveys a sense of disillusionment and weariness with the situation at hand. The repetition of "I'm no winner" underscores a sense of self-doubt and a realization of not fitting into societal norms or expectations.
In the final chorus, the singer reiterates the idea that devotion may be their downfall, echoing the repeated struggles and cyclical patterns of emotional turmoil. The song ends with a resigned acceptance of this inevitable struggle, emphasizing the emotional toll that devotion can take on an individual. Overall, the lyrics of "Devotion" paint a portrait of internal conflict, vulnerability, and a desperate search for understanding and resolution in the tangled web of love and devotion.
