The Stone Roses released their second album, Second Coming, in 1994, which received mixed reviews. The group soon disbanded after several line-up changes throughout the supporting tour, which began with Reni departing in early 1995, followed by Squire in April 1996. Brown and Mani dissolved the remains of the group in October 1996 following their appearance at Reading Festival.
Following much intensified media speculation, the Stone Roses called a press conference on 18 October 2011 to announce that the band had reunited and would perform a reunion world tour in 2012, including three homecoming shows in Heaton Park, Manchester. Plans to record a third album in the future were also floated but only two singles were released. In June 2012, Chris Coghill, the writer of a new film which is set during the Stone Roses 1990 Spike Island show, revealed that the band "have at least three or four new tracks recorded". In June 2013, a documentary about the band's reformation directed by Shane Meadows and titled The Stone Roses: Made of Stone was released.
In 2016, the Stone Roses released their first new material in two decades. The band members continued to tour until June 2017, at which point cryptic remarks by Brown indicated the band had split again, which was later confirmed in a 2019 interview with Squire.

'Cause they're never gonna hatch
You can't catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack
'cause you're too dull baby
You can't see the wood for the trees
'Cause you're too slow baby
You just couldn't get off your knees
Don't count your chickens
You can't catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack
'Cause you're too dull baby
You can't see the wood for the trees
'Cause you're too slow baby
You just couldn't get off your knees
I can see the love and the hate in your eyes
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do and what you gonna say?
I'm not the only one believing there's an easier way
It doesn't pay to disorientate me
It doesn't cost to be someone
I am the vine
And you're the branches
Don't knock a young man
you don't know what he'll get done
You can't kick and old man see what he's become
You are far too lazy
You stick to your pillow with ease
'Cause you're much too lazy
you just couldn't get off your knees
I can see the love and the hate in your eyes
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do and what you gonna say?
I'm not the only one believing there's an easier way
It doesn't pay to disorientate me
It doesn't cost to be someone
I am the vine
And you're the branches
Don't count your chickens
'Cause they're never gonna hatch
You can't catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack
'Cause you're too dull baby
You can't see the wood for the trees
'Cause you're too slow baby
You just couldn't get off your knees
I can see the love and the hate in your eyes
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do and what you gonna say?
I'm not the only one believing there's an easier way
What'ya gonna do with the rest of your life
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
I am the vine
And you're the branches
The lyrics to The Stone Roses' song "Something Burning" are full of warnings against overconfidence and laziness. The repeated line, "Don't count your chickens 'cause they're never gonna hatch," is a reminder not to get ahead of oneself, as the future is uncertain. The comparison of trying to catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack emphasizes the futility of using brute force to achieve a goal. Instead, the song suggests that one should be more perceptive and observant, rather than being too dull or slow to see the bigger picture.
The lyrics also address the theme of identity, with lines such as "Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise" and "I am the vine and you're the branches." The latter could be interpreted as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all people, with the singer as the source of growth and those around him as the branches that extend out from him. The former line suggests that people have a public persona and a private inner life, and that there is often more going on beneath the surface.
Overall, "Something Burning" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of complacency and the importance of staying aware and adaptable. The lyrics are delivered over a catchy, danceable beat with jangly guitars and a driving bassline.

Can't believe how little views this song has. One of their best songs. Moody, elusive, tense, psychedelic - it's perfect!
