The Stone Roses released their second album, Second Coming, in 1994, which received mixed reviews. The group soon disbanded after several line-up changes throughout the supporting tour, which began with Reni departing in early 1995, followed by Squire in April 1996. Brown and Mani dissolved the remains of the group in October 1996 following their appearance at Reading Festival.
Following much intensified media speculation, the Stone Roses called a press conference on 18 October 2011 to announce that the band had reunited and would perform a reunion world tour in 2012, including three homecoming shows in Heaton Park, Manchester. Plans to record a third album in the future were also floated but only two singles were released. In June 2012, Chris Coghill, the writer of a new film which is set during the Stone Roses 1990 Spike Island show, revealed that the band "have at least three or four new tracks recorded". In June 2013, a documentary about the band's reformation directed by Shane Meadows and titled The Stone Roses: Made of Stone was released.
In 2016, the Stone Roses released their first new material in two decades. The band members continued to tour until June 2017, at which point cryptic remarks by Brown indicated the band had split again, which was later confirmed in a 2019 interview with Squire.

The Stone Roses Lyrics

I hear my needle hit the groove
And spiral through another day
I hear my song begin to say
Kiss me where the sun don't shine
The past was yours but the future's mine
You're all out of time
I feel hollow, I feel weak
Passion fruit and holy bread
Fill my guts and ease my head
Through the early morning sun
I can see her, here she comes
She bangs the drums
Have you seen her? Have you heard?
The way she plays, there are no words
To describe the way I feel
How could it ever come to pass?
She'll be the first, she'll be the last
To describe the way I feel
The way I feel
Have you seen her? Have you heard?
The way she plays, there are no words
To describe the way I feel
How could it ever come to pass?
She'll be the first, she'll be the last
To describe the way I feel
The way I feel
Have you seen her? Have you heard?
The way she plays, there are no words
To describe the way I feel
How could it ever come to pass?
She'll be the first, she'll be the last
To describe the way I feel
The way I feel
The Stone Roses’ song She Bangs the Drums is a celebration of the power and joy of music. The lyrics convey a sense of excitement and energy, as the singer describes the feeling of the earth moving as they listen to music. They also describe the physical sensation of music, with the line “I hear my needle hit the groove” suggesting the visceral experience of dropping a needle on a vinyl record. The singer seems to be caught up in the moment, unable to control their own body and feeling “hollow” and “weak” as a result of the overwhelming power of music.
The song’s catchy melody and driving rhythm are reflected in the lyrics, which have a decidedly playful and tongue-in-cheek tone. The line “kiss me where the sun don't shine” is a humorous reference to the slang term for the buttocks, and the declaration that “the past was yours but the future's mine” is a bold claim to ownership and control.
The song’s chorus, which repeats the lines “have you seen her, have you heard?” and “the way she plays, there are no words,” is a tribute to the transformative power of music, and to the performer who is able to harness that power. The lyrics suggest that the experience of listening to music is ineffable, and that the only way to truly describe it is through the music itself. Overall, She Bangs the Drums is a celebration of music and the thrilling, transcendent experience it can offer.
