Founded in Detroit, Michigan, United States in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes. Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in the mid-1960s with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left the group for a solo career in 1970, and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of the Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.

Only doll I've ever owned
Well, I love you just the way I loved that rag doll
Only now my love has grown
And it gets stronger stronger in every way yeah
And it gets deeper deeper everyday
And it gets higher higher day by day
Do I love you, my, oh, my
Ooo, baby
River deep, mountain high
Yeah, yeah, yeah
If I lost you, would I cry? Oh-ho
Oh, how I love you baby
Baby, baby
When you were a young girl
Did you have a puppy
That always followed you around?
Well, I'm gonna be as faithful as that puppy
You know I'll never let you down
'Cause it goes on an on
On an on
Like the river flows
And it gets deeper, baby
Deeper
Heaven knows
And it gets sweeter baby
Sweeter
As it flows
Do I love you, my, oh, my
River deep mountain high
'Cause it's so high
If I lost you, would I cry?
Oh, how I love you baby
I love you
Baby, baby
How I love you, baby
Like the flower loves the spring
And I love ya, baby
Like the robin loves to sing
Ooo hoo and I love you, baby
Like a school girl loves her pie, yeah
And I love baby
River deep and mountain high
I love ya baby
The mountain so high
And river deep
Woo, oh, baby, baby
I love ya baby, hoo
I bet ya do
I love you, baby
Do you love me?
Yes I do oh-ho
Do I love you, my, oh, my
Tell me, tell me, tell me
River deep mountain high
Oh, if I lost you
If I lost you
Would I cry
Would I cry baby?
I love you, baby, baby
Baby
Tell me do ya love me, baby?
I love you, yeah
River so deep (I love you, baby)
Mountain so high (river deep)
Oh-ho, yeah, baby (mountain high)
Oh-oh yeah (I love you, baby, river deep)
River deep, mountain high (mountain high)
River so deep mountain so so so so high (I love you, baby, river deep, mountain high)
Yes, I love you, baby (I love you, baby)
Ah ah ah ah ah ah yeah baby (river deep, mountain high)
(I love you, baby)
I love you (river deep, mountain high)
Yeah yeah, yes, I do
(I love you, baby, river deep)
The Supremes' song "River Deep, Mountain High" is a powerful love ballad that tells the story of falling deeply in love. The verse of the song begins with a childhood memory of a rag doll, which sets the stage for the growth of the singer's love for her partner. As the chorus begins, the singer expresses the depth of her love in every possible way, saying that it gets stronger, deeper, and higher each day. The love she feels is compared to a river that flows on and on, getting sweeter and deeper as it goes. The verse then shifts to the partner's memories of a childhood pet, which serves as a symbol for the singer's promise to always be faithful and never let them down. Finally, the song concludes with the singer's declaration of love and the question of whether her partner loves her in return.
The lyrics of "River Deep, Mountain High" are a perfect example of how love can grow and deepen over time. The river metaphor is a powerful image that perfectly captures the fluidity and unpredictability of love. It is also interesting to note the reference to childhood memories, which are often associated with a sense of innocence and purity. This adds a layer of sweetness and nostalgia to the song, which makes it that much more poignant.

My fave is the non-Spector version TIna Turner recorded in the early 70s. It really captures the energy of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJr3v8P5GMQ
