Miracle
The Temper Trap Lyrics

Leaving us in wonder as it sleeps
Who on Earth can fathom, who on Earth can know?
You are but a thought in your maker's eyes
And I may not always believe
But you're nothing short of a miracle
You will rise and fall like the rest of us
Love will keep you up, and always be the crutch
That will see you through to the very last
And I may not always believe
But you're nothing short of a miracle
Clever minds will second guess
But to me, you're a living miracle
Something else comes over me
Grace has come to set me free
In your hands, you hold a new forever
We may not always believe
Past which side we really see
Pride and lust is our disease
And the cure is you, little miracle
The lyrics to The Temper Trap's song "Miracle" celebrate the beauty and wonder of life, conveyed through a metaphor of a little shade growing into a tree. The song encourages the listener to consider the miraculous nature of existence, and the power of love and connection to sustain us through life's ups and downs. The lyrics also acknowledge the challenges we face as humans, with our "feeble, tiny hands," and the tendency to struggle with pride and lust as "our disease." However, the ultimate message is one of hope and faith in the power of something greater than ourselves, embodied in the "little miracle" of life.
The metaphor of a tree growing from a small seedling is a common motif in literature and music, representing growth, resilience, and the power of potential. The lyrics suggest that we all have the potential for greatness, but must be sustained by love, and humbled by our connection to something greater. The repeated phrase "I may not always believe" acknowledges the difficulties of maintaining faith in the face of doubt and uncertainty, but ultimately affirms the power of the miraculous nature of life to inspire wonder and awe.
One of the most interesting things about "Miracle" is its use in popular media. The song was featured prominently in a 2013 episode of the TV show "Grey's Anatomy," as well as several advertisements for major brands such as Apple and Gatorade. The song has also been covered by a number of artists, including The Voice Australia winner Harrison Craig. Additionally, the song was written by lead singer Dougy Mandagi about his young niece, who was battling a rare brain disorder at the time of the song's creation. The personal and emotional investment in the song's lyrics makes its message of hope and resilience all the more powerful.
