The Thing is a Norwegian/Swedish jazz band, consisting of Mats Gustafsson (… Read Full Bio ↴The Thing is a Norwegian/Swedish jazz band, consisting of Mats Gustafsson (saxophones), Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten (double bass), and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums).
The trio was established in February 2000 during a series of concerts in Stockholm and a recording of Don Cherry-compositions that was released in Sweden by the label Crazy Wisdom/Universal. Melding German, British and American traditions of free music, their repertoire has later been collected from various sources such as James Blood Ulmer, Frank Lowe, PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Lightning Bolt and Joe McPhee. McPhee was also a participating musician on the "She Knows..." album (2001).
"Garage" was released on the Smalltown Superjazzz label in 2004. An EP of live material performed with Joe McPhee and Cato Salsa Experience was released in 2005, as well as a live album.

Some recording engineers (I'm one of them) think that this is the best one microphone drum recording ever made! The Sonics took over the studio after the engineer found the sweet spot of the room for the rhythm track, and turned the board WAY up into the red to get that distortion. Certainly one of the first Punk recordings ever!

The 60's Pacific NW rock sound kicked ass. The Sonics, The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders. Such a soulful, ballsy brand of rock and roll. Nothin' complicated here, just an irresistable guitar groove, pounding drums, a manic sax break and soul shouting that would have Little Richard shouting "lord, have mercy!"

These guys were the soundtrack for my youth! We would play their albums through a P.A. system. Bob Bennett's drumming was as powerful as any rhythm maker I've ever heard and I still get that feeling I had then when I cue up "have Love Will Travel" or "Strychnine" on my IPod. Our kids and their kids can't believe the Sonics were from "that" era, since their sound transcends the time between then and now. It's the "real deal" if you are looking for what "Rock & roll" really means.

Actually, the whole Pacific Northwest was rockin' about like this at the time (for =some= reason). The Kingsmen were from Portland, ya know. But the style here is actually from Southwest LA. Richard Berry & the Pharoahs and Ike & Tina Turner for =sure=. The beat worked perfectly for the "Slauson Shuffle," the most popular dance step of the day.

Back in that time they actually had regional top ten hits. If one looks at some of the regional weekly top forties back then you would have local hits sprinkled in with national sellers. Yeah the Black Keys also drew me to this rocker. Written by Richard Berry, who also wrote Louie Louie, apparently the most covered rock song ever. The best known version was by The Kingsmen with the muffled vocal track that sounded like it was recorded in a garage.
