It’s a fantastic book. They researched and interviewed the band, the club owners, the girlfriends, the record label, the other bands on the scene, etc. It is comprehensive. But what really makes it great are the insane stories of the band themselves, and how they subvert their own career time and time again. A must read, even if you don’t know the band.

@T- man So your pretty much agree as i do but you don't want to commit yourself totally! Only band that sounds better to me or as good at moments are Neil Young and Crazy Horse (not considered technically good). The Replacements studio records show their talent which ranks among the Beatles and Stones.

I don’t agree that they are necessarily the greatest band of all time, but they are certainly one of the greatest bands of all time and they are my personal favorite band of all time. They are absolutely the most underrated band ever though.

Greatest biography I've ever read. It's one of those books that you constantly think about it when you are not reading it. The story is like a time bomb attached to a rocket blasting off. Can't recommend this book enough.

I'd sworn off "Rock Lit" a while ago, but I had to read this one. Boy, am I glad I did, a terrific read that was by turns, hilarious, heart-wrenching, horrifying, despairing and triumphant. So, often while reading this one, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry... I did both.

There is a movie coming out and it will miss the whole first rung. Even if Paul was angry, we don't need to know all of it in spades. We don't hear much dirt on Biden because of the Leftist media. We don't know a lot about a lot so why take an underrated and greatest band in the world ever (not live though, just studio) and bring them down one more time? Make them more loveable and accessible. Only the Replacements deserve this treatment, not Hitler or Biden of course

Great band but the firing or quitting of Bob Stinson (RIP) changed them of course. Very raw in their early days. To me they wrote some of the greatest songs in rock.

I grew up in the Twin Cities with the Replacements as a major part of the sonic landscape and this is a fantastically well written book, very powerful book - you will never forget what you learn in this page-turner. Thank you for writhing this about one of my favorite bands, RIP Bob Stinson.

Saw them at the Town Pump in Vancouver in the 80's. A legendery drunken, but great performance. Most of the audience, myself included, were pretty lubricated as well and it became a perfect synthesis of band and fans.

Grew up on these guys, there music wasnt typical for my tastes, but they grabbed me by my throat and havent let go thirty years later and three children later.
Reading your book? It all makes sense. We are all Replacements, taking our broken parts, moving forward and feeling like we're faking our way through normal lives.
The book is both Catharsis and celebration for me.
One of the finest books, far beyond simple rock journalism, that I've ever read.

1987 was a hell of a year for music. I ditched my beloved metal (mostly) in light of all the stellar alternatives. Jane's Addiction would close out the year for me.

I'm about a third of the way through the book. I was in college at UW River Falls during their hey day, so I was away for much of it. Great read about 4 Twin City kids making their way in the world, through many of the trials and tribulations many of us have navigated. Great band. Great story. I highly recommend the book.

Finishing up the book now. Great read, and very bittersweet - you get the sense these guys could have been as big as U2, and lasted just as long, but that they squandered their talents due to their alcoholism and emotional issues.

I got the hard cover version of the book in the post two days before flying to Europe. It was massive and heavy and took up 10% of my small suitcase, but damn it was worth bringing. I was a hardcore Replacements fan in the late 80's and this book conveyed all the sadness and magic that made the band special.

Being such a huge fan of the Replacements I'm certainly biased, but this is a great read. Other books have been written about the band (and I enjoyed those too) however, Bob Mehr somehow was able to finally exposed the underbelly of these guys.

I think their story would make a very entertaining and enlightening movie, or maybe it would be better for someone to take on a project of making a TV series about not just The Replacements, but the entire Mpls Scene from about 75 to 89 or later? I say 75 because you could start with the Suicide Commandos who started up in 75 and Prince's first band with Andre Cymone, also started up in 75. I mean, now with this book coming out and after the Replacements tried to do a reunion and now the Suburbs are making music again, all on top of Prince passing away, interest in the whole story could be very high.

i just cannot imagine the work, tenacity and cleverness it took for mehr to build trust with these people. i am so glad he let it take its time and did not rush this story out. it really needed and well deserved his care. and lucky for us on top of that mehr is a great writer.

I've been interested in this. I was fortunate enough to record with Mike Bosley which led to jamming with Bash and Pop. Tommy decided to use Max. This has been the soundtrack to my life and I got as close as I could. I've heard lots of great stories but never all the 411 about Bob leaving. There was a piece I remember in rolling stone but the actual departure I think was omitted. Great stuff.

This is the kind of Rock Bio pic I would love to see. The book is brilliant and like The Replacements themselves, unafraid to punch you in the face and smile while handing you a beer and inviting you to sit down and have a drink. One of the most influential bands to emerge from the 80's, they helped "cut" the attitude of the era with their sheer ferocity and lack of fear. So many genres owe pretty much everything to The 'Mats, one of those rare bands that evolved music by elevating the standards of so many different genres and a lot of times doing it to prove that they could and forcing everyone else to up their game. Hands down my favorite band and odds are after reading Trouble Boys you will come to find out that their fingers and signature is all over the works of most of your favorite artists to this day. They might not have started it all, but while that coin is flipping heads/tails in the air, they might very well have once you truly see the scope of effect this very rarely talked about band had on the industry and many of it's movements and revolutions. These guys were more earnest and brutal and punk rock with their ballads (which are F'n beautiful) than most hard core bands of the time that were trying to make their bones. It's that honesty and fearlessness in their music and in their day to day that made them so great and it's why they still stand up today, toe to toe vs anything you can throw at them and it is also why I think that they still come up on top at the end of it.

@bunny fish Not sure, in retrospect, how good they were, but back in the day I really enjoyed bands like Slave Raider & Powermad on the heavy side of things and Information Society and The Jets on the pop side of things, both of whom did have enough success not to be considered one hit wonders. Oh, and how could you forget to list The Suburbs? Heck, even The Wallets had one hit song. Seemed to me Minneapolis was boiling over with hot bands. If they didn't grow up here, they moved here for some reason and joined up with other like minded folk. Prince's sister even put out a really good album. It didn't get much attention but I loved it.

A SUPERB read. When I moved back to Sconnie from Oregon (don't ask me why) In December 2016 tried to get the book...no one had it. Finally this past summer I got the Ebook & read it in one night. Besides sci-fi/cyberpunk - faves of my childhood - Hunter S. Thompson was the ONLY author who could hold my interest this much as an adult. I recommend this book to EVERYONE. Thank you for such a great story!

I'm French and the Replacements are totally unknown in France. I ordered Bob Mehr's book and I took such great pleasure in reading it! One of the finest rock biographies ever written! And a harrowing example of a "might have been" band with many funny anecdotes. See for example the first meeting between the Mats' and Bob Dylan during the recording of All Shook Down in 1990.

These guys are my hero's and one of the best rock and roll bands of all time....but can't help but to shake your head and say..."what were you thinking...???" as you're reading it. The main thing is Paul could write great heart on your sleeve and alternative rock songs. I don't think Tommy and Paul are that close since they went on a tour of England and the billing was Paul Westerberg and the Replacements and Tommy wanted a little love too?

It broke my heart when Bob came by the Harriett Ave house in Mpls in about 1991 -1992 (think Fat Miss Mary days-if if anyone gets that reference I'll fall the hell over) kinda messed up.Dope was a dime a dozen then. What an awesome dude, though! A LOT of talent! I think this was the time that Lung Leg was crashing there and damn, did anyone sleep at that place or the place where everyone crashed with Run Westy Run in Uptown Mpls? (Nod off yes,...sleep, no) Does anyone remember Run Westy Run, Billy Goat, Porno For Pyros and Tripping Daisies ? I think they might have all played with the Replacements at one time or another.What a time in music history in Mpls. So many untold stories!
