@@1ice3690 Yeah brother, Freefall is for special operations units missions only. By special operations I don't mean only "Group", there are some units like LRS, LRSD, and Some Ranger that have needs of squares. The best suggestion I can give is get Airborne school in your contract and that will start you on the path and then your choices begin after that. Some people are able to get RIP (Ranger Indoctrination Program) in their contracts I am told but cant confirm personally.

🇩🇰 Did you know, that the test jumps for the stuntmen in the Mission Impossible 6 scene were done at Dropzone Denmark ? 👍🏻
They jumped from 20.000ft testing the actual O² helmets that are used in the movie.
I was part of the ground safety team for the stuntmen. 🤙🏼😎

@@ironcito1101 That's what I estimated as well. Even If you jump 10 times a day (Which seems a little far fetched, given the time to pack a parachute, check it and get airborne to a sufficient altitude while being alert enough) it's an incredible amount of time spent in the air.

Concerning A Bridge Too Far, my dad was one of those jumping out the plane and yes they used actual British Army paratroopers for those shots. So aside for some camera trickery to make it look like more planes & paratroopers than there actually were, yes it was completely 100% done for real.

I knew a TA Para guy who was on this shoot. He said there were only one or possibly two Dakotas used and most of the troops jumped from Hercules aircraft which were kept out of shot. The best thing he said was that, apart from being given WW2 Denisons to wear, they just used their normal 1970s equipment as it hadn't advanced much since 1944!

I enlisted in Para Reg in 1980 A Bridge to Far was compulsory viewing a lot of my instructors had jumped in the movie. Technical fault in the movie the Brits are jumping with reverse chutes WW2 they didn't.

@@steveforster9764 Interesting point, the problem with war movies and equipment is sometimes what was used is no longer available. Case in point the German tanks used in that movie were Leopard tanks because the panzers were no longer around. They even had to use fiberglass mock ups of Sherman tanks because they only had four or so real ones. (Patton was even worse because they used American M47s and M48s tanks - ironically Patton tanks). As for parachutes, someone like me who was never in the service let alone jump trained wouldn't know it just by looking at it. Nevertheless, it is a good point to remember. I would ask if there is any difference between the two parachutes and if it would make a difference to the people using them. Considering the fact the ones jumping were paratroopers would they prefer the modern chutes to the older ones and would that make a difference? Would they need different training to use the older style chutes?

Great info about the WWII paratroopers!
My GF’s (late) father was in the Australian army during WWII and he ended up as a jump instructor in the pioneering 1st Australian Parachute Battalion, and wearing Australia’s first red beret.
He’d say that during his training jumps, when the jumpmaster told you to go, you had to show no fear or hesitation. If you hesitated even a second, you were out for good!
My GF’s father said he was young and stupid back then and had no troubles going ‘full send’, a term in today’s language that describes their actions perfectly.

I was an army paratrooper and parachute rigger for about 4 years. I can tell you that from day one, they preach packing the parachute correctly over anything else. It’s cause each chute is packed and logged and if anything ever happens, they know who prepared it.

When I was in, if you suspected the chute wasn't rigged properly, you could hand it back to the rigger and he had to jump with it (Yes - he, no she - I went through Basic Airborne before the 82 went coed)

Thanks for sharing some of your expertise and experience with us. My Dad was in the British Parachute Regt. 4 years after the war so the kit and jumping was virtually unchanged. He said they had no backup chute... Jumped from Dakotas all static line drops. He did one glider exercise too but they shortly stopped glider ops because there were too many dangers and potential of losing a whole platoon in one bad accident. He joked that they must of disliked him because a month after he left they brought in backup chutes and introduced new aircraft with rear exit ramps which were a whole lot safer. RIP Dad. Always in my heart.

Tom Cruise is actually a licensed skydiver - that entire scene was shot in Perris, CA, if I recall they had to do about 120 or something skydives to get the entire thing as it is.

I have had the very unpleasant experience about 40 years ago of watching of a friend unable to pull their reserve rip cord. He was using a rig made by Pioneer Parachutes. It was a "convertible" rig that could convert from the reserve on your back or on the front for doing "style jumping". It came with 3 rip cords, one for the main, the reserve on the back, and the reserve on the front. The rip cord for the back was much longer then the one for front mount. The problem was many people lost the short reserve rip cord. If they decided to do some style work and moved the reserve to the front they used the longer reserve rip cord. This meant they had to loop the rip cord and rip cord housing under the bungy cords. Unfortunately because of the increased friction caused by the extra loops he could not pull the rip cord. This was the first parachuting accident the Canadian Dept. of Transport ever investigated as an air accident.. After testing the reserve in their lab they stated the way the reserve rip cord was routed there is not a man alive that could of pulled that rip cord in the air. Pioneer Parachutes in all their documentation stated only the short reserve rip cord should be used for the reserve when mount on the front.

A friend was in the Parachute Regiment when A Bridge Too Far was filmed. They performed the drop that is shown in this scene. That is why it's correct and a 10/10, as they were proper Airborne troops.

As Insider stated itself: "If you have seen any movie in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, this next fact won't surprise you: Cruise did the entire HALO sequence without a stuntman. But pulling off the sequence — which included 106 total jumps to get three scenes and was all done after Cruise broke his ankle earlier in production — was as epic as what is on the screen". I'm pretty sure the 7 factored in the fact that they actually performed a HALO jump. He pretty clearly stated that what made it unrealistic was the storm and he's there to rate the realism of a scene from the perspective of a parachutist, not how awesome the stunt was.

@@joecola6415 lol To be technically pedantic, ol' dude here was only talking about the difficulty of putting ON the parachute. In mid air. The bit about landing with no parachute at all, is sort of a different question.
But I'm glad you reminded me of those two other maniacs anyway. I had forgotten about them.

I hear skydiving is one of those life changing experiences. I could never do it because of my nerves and fear of falling. But if I was ever given the chance I might try the static line jumping like this. No time to hesitate when the line is rushing out the door, so no time to think of how crazy this is. And if you do hesitate you can count on being pushed out. Plus you don’t have to worry about deploying your chute, because it should deploy the second you jump. Then all you have to worry about is not hitting anything or anyone or being hit by anything as you float to the ground. Of course this chance will probably never be made available to me, unless I join the armed forces. And the only way that is happened is if I am drafted.

If it makes you feel any better, as long as you jump from a plane thats moving you never get that dropping feeling in your stomach. It mostly just feels very windy with a good view.

honestly, it feels like you are floating not falling - I personally feel, much like scuba diving, etc, this is one thing everyone needs to experience, if yo u hate it, at least you know you hate it, odds are you will come out feeling like you can accomplish anything after that.

It's going around on circles till u reach the jump altitude is what messes with u. Other than that. Once u jump, it's just pressure. So. Take a deep breath. 😁😁

I only have 193 exits, in 7 countries 4 continents, some sport free fall and some military static line operations. I enjoy someone like Mr. Elliott speaking on this subject, and with my limited experience I can only watch in amusement at some of the parachute operations the pretenders in Hollywood try to make realistic. Market Garden footage is absolutely marvelous.

I think the skydiving part of Moonraker is probably the most amazing. Obviously unrealistic freefall time but shows actual freefall movements of stabilizing from unpoised aircraft exit, tracking, docking, etc. all this done WITHOUT CGI or any other special effects exception film editing from several jumps and studio closeups. What I think is remarkable is consider when this was done in 1979 was unthinkable ten years earlier. The movie "The Gypsy Moths" in 1969 showed state of art skydiving with aerial filming by the legendary Carl Boenish. While 10 years after that looked primitive but someone had to start somewhere and the experience and techniques developed during 1970s provided truely amazing skydiving for Moonraker. And 20 years before that 1959 is the first documented baton pass.

This was interesting. Though, I don't fully understand rating - sometimes he made a point that film is not realistic, but gave a high note. Everything else is really cool, I've enjoyed hearing this guy.

The amount of jumps he’s done as stated in the beginning of the video has to be spot on. All that wind resistance in free fall pushed his hairline wayyyy back.
