Fire
The Vampires Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I look into it and it's black.
Why can't I feel,
My skin should crack and peel.
I want the fire back.
Now through the smoke she calls to me.
To make my way across the flame.
To save the day,
I guess it's all the same.
So I will walk through the fire
'Cause where else can I turn.
I will walk through the fire,
And let it...
SPIKE: The torch I bear is scorching me,
And Buffy's laughing I've no doubt.
I hope she fries.
I'm free if that bitch dies.
I'd better help her out.
SWEET:'Cause she is drawn to the fire
Some people never learn (SPIKE: She will never learn)
SWEET/SPIKE: And she will walk through the fire and let it...
GILES: Will this do a thing to change her?
Am I leaving Dawn in danger?
Is my Slayer too far gone to care?
XANDER: What if Buffy can't defeat it.
ANYA: Beady-eyes is right, we're needed,
Or we could just sit around and glare.
GROUP: We'll see it through
It's what we're always here to do.
So we will walk through the fire.
BUFFY: So one by one they turn from me.
I guess my friends can't face the cold (TARA: What can't we face?)
But why I froze not one among them knows (TARA: If we're together?)
And never can be told
(Sung at the same time as the scoobies)
SWEET: So one by one they come to me.
The distant redness as their guide.
But what they'll find.
Ain't what they have in mind.
It's what they have inside.
(Sung at the same time as sweet)
ANYA: She came from the grave much graver.
SPIKE: First he'll kill her then I'll save her.
TARA: Everything is turning out so dark
Buffy: Going through the motions,
Walking through the part.
SPIKE: No I'll save her then I'll kill her.
WILLOW: I think this line's mostly filler
GILES: What's it gonna take to strike a spark.
BUFFY: These endless days, (SWEET: she will come to me.)
Are finally ending in a blaze.
BUFFY/SPIKE/GROUP: And we are caught in the fire.
The point of no return.
So we will walk through the fire,
And let it burn,
Let it burn,
Let it burn,
Let it burn.
The song "Fire" from the musical episode "Once More, with Feeling" of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a powerful a capella number with each character involved in a different sub-plot. As someone who touches the fire and is frozen by it, Buffy struggles with her emotional numbness and lack of ability to feel. She reflects on her desire to feel the fire again and is reminded of this when she is called to cross through it by a woman in the smoke. Spike, who harbors resentment towards Buffy, contemplates allowing her to die while finding himself torn by his need to help her. Meanwhile, Giles fears for Buffy’s ability to deal with the upcoming danger and the consequences of her choices, and Xander and Anya argue about their roles in the fight. In the end, the characters realize the sacrifices they must make and the risks they must take to protect their loved ones and defeat evil, despite the possibility of harm or death.
The lyrics are filled with symbolism that depict each character's motivations and fears while also reflecting overarching themes of the series. Buffy's desire to walk through the fire to feel it again represents her struggle with depression and wanting to feel alive again. The metaphorical fire resonates with the series' themes of loss, sacrifice, and redemption. Spike's internal conflict between wanting Buffy to die and needing to save her, reflects his contradictory feelings towards her and his own self-doubts. The song also highlights the bonds that the characters share, despite their differences and internal conflicts, and how they must band together to protect each other.
