Formed in 1992, the band originally comprised Tim Freedman (lead vocals, piano), Stevie Plunder (lead vocals, guitar) and Andy Lewis (double bass, backing vocals). The line-up has changed many times over the years with Tim the only consistent member of the band, not to mention the only original member still alive. In the current line-up Terepai Richmond hits the drums, Warwick Hornsby plays the bass, and Jak Housden steals the scene on the electric guitar alongside the ever-present Tim Freedman.
Their style of music has been described as muscular piano based pop/rock, however it has been quite varied over the life of the band. Their latest album is titled Little Cloud and is a double album, separated by the two themes of New York and Tim's homeland Sydney.
The band played their final shows in 2010, taking an extended break for Freedman to pursue a solo career.
In 2012, the band were announced as one of the headliners of the Caloundra Music Festival on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Best Work

How in the world can anyone love again?
Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
But I still don't want to know if you're moving on
I never dreamed about you
And now that I'm without you
You're here all through the night
Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
I would ride the ups and downs
Be a man and get my feet back on the ground
Some of my best work
Some of my best work
My best work was you
But I still don't want to know if you're moving on
There's no lovers up above
No lovers only love
The Whitlams’s "Best Work" is a melancholic song that speaks to the aftermath of a heartbreak. The lyrics are written with an emotional depth that captures the pain and regret that a person feels after a relationship has ended. The opening line, "After the fall things will never be the same" speaks directly to the sense of loss that the person is feeling. The idea that life after a break-up can't be the same is one that resonates with most people, and the writer uses this as a way to frame the idea of moving on from the relationship.
The next line of the song, "How in the world can anyone love again?" is a powerful reminder of how it can feel impossible to open up your heart to someone new after a heartbreak. The main sentiment of the song is then introduced - "Some of my best work was you". It’s a deeply personal and candid line that suggests the singer's relationship with their partner was their greatest accomplishment. This person was the source of inspiration for them, and without them, they feel lost.
The lyrics are then repeated throughout the song, underscoring the singer's wish for the return of the person they lost. The line "But I still don't want to know if you're moving on" speaks to that sense of fear that comes with a relationship ending. The pain of being replaced or forgotten is something that can be difficult to come to terms with, and the writer is reminding us of this broken-hearted feeling.
