TWO* of Charles Leon’s sons died in WW1. So two of Napoleon’s direct grandchildren were killed fighting for France in the First World War. We got this information from his daughter who said that one of HER sons died in WW1 as well. So that’s two direct grandsons and 1 great grandson of Napoleon’s claimed by the Great War.

I could only find the records for one son Fernand Leon 1861- 9th December 1918 died Ile-de-France Paris. I couldn’t find out the circumstances of his death. I did find a list of siblings none of which died in WW1, interesting one died in Venezuela Charles Leon II 1855 - April 8th 1894

Just out of interest, my Auntie is directly related to the Walewski's. After Napoleons death, she married again to a D'Ornano and more children to him. My Aunts great grandmother was one of these children. She still has some letters written from Napoleon. the D'ornano brood have gone on to found and run SISLY cosmetics, a massive empire also.

Léon Bonaparte was also known for his (strong) resemblance with his father.
There also a rumour that when Napoléon died on Saint-Hélène, the plaster was very rare and the quality wasn't the best, some people even think that the Napoléon's death mask is actually Léon's one.

My dad’s family comes from Corsica - where the Bonapartes originate. He looked exactly like Napoleon throughout his life. Did he have shared ancestry with the Little Corporal (French nick name for NB), I will probably never know.

Yes, this is to me why James A Michener´s Family Sagas sound so true basicly. those things rally happene. Even though not all the described details must not be correct because he had romanicised them ( as in Poland ) out of personsl reasons and also because Historians have found out bettter explanations for events and cultural issues

@John Porteous In Medieval in economical stable Places were folks did not migrated much around there it became commen that a lot for families with ties throughout the nearby areas became commen with the ongoing centuries. Like my grandfather´s in and around MÜNSTER in North-West Germany not to far from the border towards the Netherlands
Part of my family line goes back there down to the Eary Middle Ages in dependancy to the (back then) Duke-Bishops ruling over the vicinity
And Corsica for that part was a rich Island over centuries thanks to the passing by trade routes and for the trade goods of the Island tiself. Out of this comes this strong Regional Pride - feeling many Corse have even today

I just saw this by chance and really enjoyed it. I bought a documentary about Napoleon a couple of months ago and was surprised that it was mentioned that he had a child by one of his mistresses. So I was happy to learn that he had two sons. Very interesting indeed. I’m interested in Napoleon because I live close to Austerlitz, or Slavkov in Czech. Thanks for your work on this.

It is the same with Napoleon´s FIELD MARSHALLS. Napoleon made them almost all merry into his family to enhance their ( and planed ) their decendants loyalty with the exception of BERNADOTTE the later King of Sweden Charles XIV JOHN, Napoleon made him marry his old flame, the silk merchant´s daughter from Lyon, Desirèe Clary. ( there are two good books to her, one, the fictional one became filmed and the other sponsored by her famaly is more scientific oriented but both give an interesting outlook on her person and her life )
Napoleon even was the baptising Onkel of Bernadotte´s son Oskar whose name he also had personaly choosen. ( no pun intended the son of Bernadotte and his wife Desirée really had been named this ) - some sources claim that Napoleon had this from a novel he was reading when Bernadotte had been named King of Sweden and the birth stood short before

Of course same can be said about the lives of the others and their descendants
So there are some interesting people among them like the American actor Auberjonios ( ODO on STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE 9 ) who was a direct decendent of Marshall Murat who also had married into Napolleons direct family for example

I thought a few years back Napoleon’s remains was tested for arsenic poisoning. It was found that there was a unusually high amount of arsenic in his remains. Do you think that he was from being poisoned while in prison or do you think the arsenic was due to his environment. On that note do you think that Napoleon the second was also being poisoned with arsenic over a long period of time considering that he died at such a young age? I personally wonder wether Napoleon was actually poisoned in custody. I tend to think it was his environment over the course of his lifetime.

Arsenic was a frighteningly common ingredient in medication, was used to sweeten wine, was used to brush furs with, etc.

If Napoleons medication for his stomach troubles contained arsenic, the frequency with which he took it would have poisoned him slowly but surely.

And when kids perform, it's rarely at the level of their famous ancestors.
