Carmilla
Theatres Des Vampires Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Her black shadow at the foot of your bed
Her pure white dress you can feel her on your breast
You can't stop her in the coils of her sweet spell
You can feel her she's so close to your heart

Every night after tolling of last bell
Silent coming languid, graceful into a trance
You can't stop her, no, you can't talk, can't escape
No more whispers. no more sorrow no more pain

Carmilla, comes to me
Mircalla, I want you
Carmilla, she comes to you
Mircalla, I want your screams

Now I see you at the foot of my bed
Your pure white dress is a one great scarlet stain
I can't stop you in the coils of your sweet spell
I can feel you, you're so close to my heart

She comes to bring the sorrow
She is like a cold embrace
She murmurs words of madness
She comes to bring the death

"You are mine, you shall be mine "
She says…"love will have its sacrifices.."
"there's a coldness beyond her years,
In her smiling endless melancholy,
The refusal to afford you the least ray of light"
You see her under the moon shadow,
Standing near the feet of your bed,
In her lacy white dress
Bathed, from her chin to her feet,
In one great scarlet stain.

She says again…
"there's no sacrifice without blood"

Overall Meaning

The song "Carmilla" by Theatres Des Vampires is a haunting and eerie tribute to the character of Carmilla from the Gothic novella of the same name by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. The lyrics evoke the image of a dark and alluring femme fatale who comes to her victims at night, tempting them with her sweet spell and ultimately bringing them sorrow and death. The opening lines describe her black shadow at the foot of her victim's bed and the feeling of her pure white dress pressing against his chest. The victim is powerless to stop her, and soon falls into a trance, captivated by her beauty and mystery.

As the song progresses, the lyrics become more intense and sinister. The repetition of the phrases "Carmilla, comes to me" and "Mircalla, I want you" suggest a desperate desire for Carmilla's attention and affection, even at the cost of one's own life. The imagery of a white dress stained with scarlet blood is a motif throughout the song, symbolizing the seductive and deadly nature of the vampire.

In the final verse, Carmilla speaks directly to her victim, claiming him as her own and proclaiming that love requires sacrifice. The lyrics suggest a kind of fatalistic romance between Carmilla and her victims, whose lives are consumed by her dark powers.

Overall, "Carmilla" is a chilling and atmospheric song that captures the Gothic horror of Le Fanu's original story. Its lyrics are filled with vivid and evocative imagery that draws the listener into its dark and unsettling world.

Carmilla is a Gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. First published in 1872, it tells the story of a young woman's susceptibility to the attentions of a female vampire named Carmilla. ;D

Yes, it is a study in repressed lesbianism, a la the vampire milieu/subculture, much as it is to be found in certain intimations in Coleridge's short but power packed poem, Christabel...

Great video. Love her voice. Any reference to one of the greatest vampire stories of all time makes it even better. Le Fanu wrote it twenty years before Stoker wrote Dracula. Unfortunately Carmilla has been overshadowed by the success of Dracula but it still remains one of the best vampire stories.
