Therion was initially a death metal band, however starting with 1995’s Lepaca Kliffoth, Therion began to gradually incorporate symphonic elements into their metal music. The band has seen many changes in line-up and style throughout its history with Christofer Johnsson being the only constant member.
Beginning as a death metal band, they later turned to combining orchestral elements with their metal music, employing heavy use of choirs and classical musicians, not only as additions to but also as integral parts of the composition. The band is one of the first both commercial and audience successful heavy metal with fully live orchestra featured. It is also one of the bands which originated, popularized and highly influenced the symphonic metal genre.
Therion takes its lyrical themes from various mythologies, occult and magical teachings, and ancient traditions and writings. The majority of the lyrics are written by Thomas Karlsson, head and founder of the magical order Dragon Rouge, of which Johnsson is a member. The band’s name originates from the Greek word therion (θηρίον), which means beast, in reference to the “beast” of the Christian Book of Revelation, as well as to the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion.

Visions coming straight from hell
Superstitious I am not
So here we go
Say your prayers, there's no god
God is dead, your god is done
You can bridge an open mind
The eyes they see, break out from this to here?
The soul, those cries, let's leave this world behind
Just as you do, just as you do, here's a story I've got to tell
You
You're free, you're free, you're free from Christianity
Just a story of truth I tell
Visions coming straight from hell
Superstitious I am not
Now here we go
Say your prayers, there's no god
God is dead, your god is done
You can bridge an open mind
You can set the souls afire?
Break out the freedom
Break out the? freedom
Break out the freedom
Just leave it all behind
Break from the chains
*?
Break from the chains
?
The hell, the sneer, with fire and despair
?
The eyes, they see break out from this to here? *
Enter the voids of the dark dominion
Just a story of truth I tell
Visions coming straight from hell
Superstitious I am not
Now here we go again... yeah
Enter the voids of the dark
Enter the voids of the dark dominion
Enter the voids of the dark
The song "Enter the Voids" by Therion touches on themes of religion, superstition, and the desire for spiritual and personal freedom. The lyrics are quite explicit, stating that there is no god, and that Christianity is a prison of superstition that one must break free from. The singer embraces the idea of "entering the voids" of the dark, which may represent the unknown and the search for a deeper truth beyond religious dogma. The repetition of the phrase "just a story of truth I tell" suggests that the singer's personal truth may be different from mainstream ideas of religion and spirituality.
The line "you can set the souls afire" could be interpreted as a call to awaken people's spirits and encourage them to question and explore their beliefs. The repeated lines "break out the freedom" and "break from the chains" suggest a desire for liberation and breaking free from the constraints of religion, while the reference to "the hell, the sneer, with fire and despair" may represent the fear and doubt that can come with such a journey.
The song's title "Enter the Voids" suggests a spiritual or emotional journey into the unknown, which may resonate with people seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and the universe beyond the confines of traditional religion.
