The original lineup consisted of Stuart Smith on rhythm guitar and vocals, Tim Collis on lead guitar, Simon Thompson on Drums and Ian Lewis on Bass. Ian and Simon left the band in 2005, to be replaced by Dan Adams (replaced by Jamie Cooper during the recording of Animals in 2008) on bass and Chris Collis (brother of guitarist Tim) on drums in early 2006. In earlier careers, bassist Jamie Cooper had worked as a graphic designer, drummer Chris Collis had been a librarian at the University of Oxford, guitarist Tim Collis was a primary school teacher, and lead vocalist Stuart Smith worked building websites for a publisher. On May 11, 2011, it was announced on This Town Needs Guns' website that lead singer Stuart Smith would be leaving the band to start a family, and that he would be replaced by Pennines' singer and guitarist, Henry Tremain. Bassist Jamie Cooper also left the band in late 2011 to focus on a full-time career in graphic design. Tremain has since taken over on bass guitar duties, converting the band into a power trio.
The band's second and third studio albums, 13.0.0.0.0 and Disappointment Island, were released in January 2013 and July 2016, both via Sargent House.

I'll be here in winter.
Tear down your baracades
So I may enter.
Your lips are warm
They comfort me.
Open up
So I'll lay on this
Bed that I have made.
So soundly sleep
And whisper your name.
Oooooh you…you burn me up.
One touch and I am in
A trance like state.
Entwinning our fates to another
The cost of our will now both bound to each other.
What was in your head
When you said
"until death"?
The marks upon your skin
Tell tales while envy
Mocks without remorse
And ties you up in knots.
One touch and I am in
A trance like state.
Entwinning our fates to another
The cost of our will now both bound to each other.
What was in your head
When you said
"until death"?
Your lies unfold
Like lines that were left
In turn and consequently
Told all.
The song "Baboon" by This Town Needs Guns is a hauntingly beautiful piece that talks about the depth of human relationships and our innate desire to be loved and accepted by someone. The opening lines, "while time waits for no man, I'll be here in winter; tear down your barricades so I may enter", set the tone of the song as someone who is waiting patiently for the other person to let their guard down and allow them to be a part of their life. It shows a deep sense of longing that can only be satisfied by the other person reciprocating the same feeling.
The second stanza talks about the physical intimacy between the two people, with the lines "your lips are warm, they comfort me; open up and let's begin". It reflects the idea of finding solace in the other person's touch and being able to open up and share everything with them. The third stanza talks about being completely lost in each other's love, to the point where their fates are intertwined with one another. The lines "what was in your head when you said 'until death'" reflect the idea of the intense commitment that comes with a relationship.
The final stanza speaks about the lies and secrets that people carry around with them, like "lines that were left in turn and consequently told all". It is a reminder that even in beautiful relationships, there can still be flaws and imperfections that need to be worked on.
