In the early years of his career he made music that, in his own words, "exploded in your face": a particularly powerful brand of synth pop with full-force vocals, notably on his earliest EPs (Hylas 001 and Hylas 002) as well as the 2015 Hylas album, the culmination of his Berlin years.
Azier gained further prominence as a co-writer and producer on Stromae's Racine Carrée album (2013).
Having moved to Paris, the albums Rouge (2017) and Stray (2018) marked a distinct shift in style, with Azier moving towards a more elegant and melodic brand of electronic pop.
Azier's fourth full-length album, Love, Disorderly, came out in 2020. In between albums, Azier continues to release EPs, such as Raven on the First Floor (2019), and singles, including the remarkable A Collection of Broken Ideas (2021), a 43-minute long suite divided into two album sides of well over 20 minutes each.
Babylon

Have a sadness in their eyes
And all the birds retuned to silence
In our lonesome paradise
'Cause I got madness in my arms
But you're my lucky charm
When all the birds return to silence
Get some sleep and I'll be fine
You know our Babylon will fall
When dreams will turn to dust
Will you believe in us?
You know our Babylon will fall
Wenn dust turns into time
Our water turns to wine
We are dancing on the tables
We are lovers taking baths
We're the royals in a fable
And the neighbours make us laugh
And everything that I adore
Just mattress on the floor
When all the birds return to silence
Get some sleep and I'll be fine
You know our Babylon will fall
When dreams will turn to dust
Will you believe in us?
You know how Babylon will fall
When dust turns into time
Our water turns to wine
And I will make you mine
Again
Thomas Azier's song Babylon is a reflection on a relationship that is not without its struggles. In the first verse of the song, Azier describes the sadness he sees in the marbles of the garden and the silence of the birds that have returned to their lonesome paradise. It is clear that the relationship has entered a difficult phase where the two lovers are experiencing sadness and loneliness.
However, despite the struggles, Azier finds comfort in his lover, who he refers to as his "lucky charm." Though he admits to having "madness" in his arms, he suggests that he will be fine if his lover gets some sleep. This line may be interpreted as Azier acknowledging that he has flaws within himself but finds solace in his partner's love.
The chorus of the song speaks to a mutual dream that the two lovers share. They both know that their Babylon will fall, and their dreams may turn to dust, but they will persevere. It is a declaration of faith in the strength of their love that they will keep pushing forward even when faced with adversity.
Overall, Babylon is a beautiful song about the struggles of maintaining a relationship and the power of love to overcome all obstacles.
