Runaway
Thompson Twins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Runaway
So you say
See you again
Some other day
Feels like I knew you so well
But it's not that easy to tell

[Chorus: x2]
If I ever see you again
Yeah, runaway
Runaway
Could not stay
Till our bodies turn to clay
Feels like I knew you so well
But it's not that easy to tell

Hearing your voice in a dream
Telling me things are not as they seem

But will I every see you again,
Yeah, runaway

Overall Meaning

The song "Runaway" by Thompson Twins talks about a possible encounter with someone special that leaves a memorable impression on the singer. The lyrics describe the ambiguity in telling whether the meeting is significant enough to make an impact on the singer's life. The chorus reiterates the theme of the song, where the singer asks the person to run away with him/her. The singer cannot stay and wants to enjoy this time together before their bodies turn to clay. The second verse implies that the singer had a dream about the person and knows that things might not be as they seem.

The song is open to interpretation, and it's unclear if the singer has met the person before or if it was a chance encounter. The lyrics leave a sense of passing opportunities and the feeling of not knowing what could have been. The chorus reinforces the idea of seizing moments and living for the present. The dream sequence adds a metaphorical layer to the song, where the character debates chasing after something that might not be as desirable in real life as it may seem in dreams.

One of my favorite songs from the New Wave era. Very simple but affecting and effective, with a great synth solo, and the haunting lines, "You could not stay / Till our bodies / turn to clay".

Thompson Twins was an archetype band for 80's and their classic albums and many hits still remain in the memory of many many people from usa, japan, new zealand and part of europe(not uk unfortunately) too...never forgotten for some young people too..

The Thompson Twins - formed in 1977; inspired by the new wave movement; evolved through various pop / dance /electro phases; disbanded in the early 90s. Neither forgotten nor short-lived...

the Thompson Twins aren't a short -lived career or forgotten pop stars..you put bands like Trio,Freur..and other near the TWINS????you're a bit blind!!!if the Thompsons are forgotten pop stars all the 80's band like Tears for fears,Eurythmics,Spandau,Culture Club..are forgotten from the mass.....but Freur or Trio never became pop stars...you write this and the teenagers read wrong things of a glourios band....VERY WRONG!!!!!!!!!!
