The Rowe
Thompson Twins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on, come on down the rowe
You'll believe exactly what your told
And you'll lay down, lay down in shade of trees
Yes, it'll happen to you just like it happened to me
Well I think using my mind
I look around for love but what do I find
I try to relax it's time for a rest
I just can't seem to get out of this mess
(chorus)
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh
Down the rowe
In a birds' nest, I find an egg
Well I break it up and rub it all over my head
And I wonder should I do this or should I do that
And does it matter if this whole story is a matter of fact
(REPEAT CHORUS)
And as a consequence of this
Well I just remembered everything I miss
So come on, come on down the rowe
You'll believe exactly what your told

Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Ya,
Oh Oh Oh Oh, Ya, Ya Ya Ya

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thompson Twins’ song “The Rowe” address the conformity and blindness that can occur in society. The singer encourages the listener to “come on down the rowe” and just believe what they’re told, even though they’ll end up “laying down in the shade of trees” just like the singer. However, the singer tries to resist this mentality and use their own mind to find love and relaxation, but they’re unable to escape the “mess” of societal expectations. The repetition of the chorus and the use of “Oh, Oh, Oh” creates a sense of frustration and desperation in the singer’s attempts to break free from the conformity of the rowe.

The idea of a “rowe” is not a commonly used term or reference, which adds to the ambiguity and mysteriousness of the lyrics. The use of the robin egg, and breaking it open and rubbing it on the singer's head, may represent a breaking free of conformity, whereas just believing what you're told equates to just staying in the nest. The repetition of the chorus and the verses with the use of "Oh" could also represent someone trying to think and they are singing these phrases to themselves.

Love this song. An amazing mix of driving, post-punk rhythm and good old fashioned psychedelia.  One of my all time favorite 80s tunes.
