Magnets Caught in a Metal Heart
Thursday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She spins magnetic rings
Around the dark violet heart of god
She's a magnetic field,
Shower of sparks,
When she comes on

There's a silent charge
In a coil of wire
When the currents pass right through it
We're coupled lines in lightning strikes,
We jump like birds on a vine
We're the magnets caught in a metal heart
Where the blood is pumping through it
When the needle spins, it sings,
"Feels like we're in love"

He spins magnetic rings that fall apart
When he's removed from her
He's a magnetic field
Under the silver clouds
Where the lining of skies
Looks like the dirt on the ground
His only true north is down

There's a silent charge
In a coil of wire
When the currents pass right through it
We're coupled lines in lightning strikes,
We jump like birds on a vine
We're the magnets caught in a metal heart
Where the blood is pumping through it
When the needle spins, it sings,
"Feels like we're in love"
"Feels like we're in love"
We're the magnets caught in a metal heart
Where the blood is pumping through it

When the needle spins, it sings,
"Feels like we're in love"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Thursday's "Magnets Caught In A Metal Heart" seem to be inspired by the concept of magnetism, and how two people can feel drawn to each other in a way that is intangible but powerful. The singer describes a woman who spins magnetic rings around the heart of God, evoking the idea of a force that is beyond our control. The woman is herself a magnetic field, a shower of sparks, and when she enters a room, it's as if the air around her crackles with energy.

The second verse describes a man who also has a magnetic field, but his rings fall apart when he's removed from the woman. He seems to be dependent on her in a way that she isn't on him, and his only true north is down, suggesting that he's lost without her. The chorus repeats the idea that the two of them are like magnets caught in a metal heart, with the blood pumping through it, and when the needle spins, it sings "feels like we're in love." This last line is particularly interesting, as it suggests that the physical sensation of attraction is not just a metaphor, but a real phenomenon that can be measured by the movements of a needle.

Overall, the song portrays love as a force that can't be explained or controlled, but which is irresistible nonetheless. The use of magnetic imagery is particularly effective, as it captures the idea of attraction between opposites, and the sense that two people can become bound together in a way that is almost magical.

I like how each of their albums have a different feel and sound while still having that amazing, one-of-a-kind Thursday feel and sound. Sometimes I wonder what they would've done visually if they'd made a video for any song on 'Waiting'. Either way this video's great! Also, has anyone else noticed how they have some of the same (for lack of a better word) 'themes' in their songs (for example: trains, counting down from 5 to 1, cities on fire, cars/driving, etc.)? Damn, these guys are talented!

All time favorite band. Spent many hours on the road seeing these guys. 22 shows. Randomly found them playing in a coffee shop in 2001 and that was it.

I still can't believe they released their best stuff then suddenly broke up... at least they ended on a high note.

Rusty Shackleford

Amazing sound, everything on point.
