the other side of the crash--over and out
Thursday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The lights go down, outside (before our cars collide)
So we silhouette ourselves (in forty shades of fire)
Do you know where this is leading? I'll meet you there.
The other side of the crash.
On the other side of the glass.

All out friends are falling out, can't look us in the eye,
Or bear to hear that broken sound.
Happens when you're all alone,
Inside, in the middle of the night I hear your voice,
I feel ashamed every time you say, "Car crash came and car crash went, so I went along with it..."
Because the girl you love's not coming back.
It'll never be the same, don't look away. I need to know if this is real. Don't look away.

The hospital ward sleeps
Thought the surgery
Hiding needles in the drawer
(for emergencies)
While outside they wait
In the pouring rain
On the other side of the glass.

Don't look away. I need to know if this is real.
Don't look away. I need to know - when will this end?
Don't look away

Over and out (of control)
The I.V. drips the days drag on
Adjust the light switch in the hall
Maybe the x-ray screen keeps it from getting dark
But the bulb burns out when it gets too hot.
Keep crashing this car (over and over)
Keep crashing this car (over and over)
Keep crashing this car (over and over)
Keep crashing this car (until it spins)
Out of control
So hold me close or I might disappear this time
Out of control
We fight currents in the water

When we can't let go of the shore.
We've lost control.

Overall Meaning

"The Other Side of the Crash/Over and Out" is a song that deals with the aftermath of a car accident, both the physical and emotional tolls it takes on the people involved. The lyrics are written in a way that suggests an ominous tone, as if the accident is a harbinger of something greater to come. The opening lines, "The lights go down outside / So we silhouette ourselves in forty shades of fire," are a powerful image of dimming hope and impending crisis.

The lyrics convey a sense of guilt and shame on the part of the singer who might have been the driver of the car that caused the accident. They ask, "Do you know where this is leading? I'll meet you there. The other side of the crash. On the other side of the glass." The glass refers to the hospital window where survivors are sometimes kept away from their loved ones. The singer is aware that their life will never be the same as they have lost someone precious.

In the chorus part, the lyrics, "Don't look away. I need to know if this is real. Don't look away. I need to know when will this end?" convey a feeling of disbelief and anxiety, asking for the truth and for the whole experience to stop hurting. The last lines, "We've lost control," suggest a feeling of falling, which encapsulates the central metaphor of the song being the car accident, which spirals one out of control.

I can't shake this awful reality that you can be doing everything right on the road and your entire life can be ended by somebody else doing something stupid

ICY-HURR

Scares me too

But if you think about it, you can be doing everything right anywhere and become a victim of the stupidity of others.

Duffal0

Wakes me up! I was on my phone earlier on the highway and passed into a lane and almost hit a car. They swerved out of the way and almost crashed. I felt so bad that I could’ve caused a wreck. Never having my phone out while driving again!

synACK

@Duffal0 the sad reality is that people know they’ll crash but still do it until it’s too late then they say “I felt so bad” like what?

Duffal0

@synACK yeah luckily I was able to escape. I feel bad for the car behind me that wrecked

Catnip 216

@Duffal0 "Feeling bad" is a walk in the park compared to what you caused for the victims. You got away with it too.
