Tiken Jah was born into a family of griots and christened Doumbia Moussa Fakoly on June 23, 1968 in Odienne, north-western Côte d'Ivoire. He discovered reggae at an early age, assembling his first group, Djelys, in 1987. He became well-known at a regional level, but would soon ascend to national recognition.
Concerned by the social and political evolution of his country, it was not long before Tiken Jah was writing incisive works on the political environment in Côte d'Ivoire. One such work was on the death of Felix Houphouet-Boigny in 1993, which resulted in a surge of popularity amongst the nation's youth. In 1998, Fakoly made his first international appearance in Paris.
Tiken Jah Fakoly plays music "to wake up the consciences". His music speaks about many injustices done to the people of his country, and those over Africa. As such, African listeners feel a deep affinity with his lyrics as Fakoly speaks for people whom are under oppression. This connection has helped make Tiken Jah Fakoly a much-listened artist throughout both Europe and Africa.

The lyrics of Tiken Jah Fakoly's song "Où Aller Où" depict a sense of despair, displacement, and uncertainty. The repeated question "Où aller où?" translates to "Where to go? Where to go?" The singer expresses his confusion and lack of direction, not knowing where to find solace or a sense of belonging.
The first verse describes how the singer has given up his boat, his soul, and even his family in order to survive. There is no more fish to catch, and hope seems to have vanished. The desperation is further emphasized by the line "Pour ne pas mourir à mon tour" which means "To not die in my turn." This suggests that people around him are losing their lives and he is forced to make sacrifices to avoid the same fate.
In the second verse, the singer recounts sleeping without stars, highlighting the darkness and lack of hope surrounding him. He has resorted to stealing bread due to the extreme dryness of the land, which symbolizes the hardship and struggle for sustenance. The line "C’est du sang qu’elle boit, et nos bras qu’elle mange" translates to "It drinks blood, and devours our arms." This vivid imagery depicts the earth as a merciless entity that demands sacrifice and offers nothing in return.
The third verse expresses the singer's decision to leave his homeland, depicted by the lyrics "Et puis je suis parti, sans guide, sans boussole" which means "And then I left, without a guide, without a compass." He disregards the cries of his mother and jumps over walls like his father once did. The chorus repeats, highlighting his uncertainty and longing for direction.
The fourth verse portrays the danger of the sea, which is often seen as a symbol of both freedom and treacherous journeys. The lyrics caution him about the sea being a tomb and not offering its help if he falls. The sea becomes a metaphor for the challenging path he has chosen. Ultimately, the singer mentions losing his entire family during the journey.
The fifth and final verse reveals a moment of awakening, where the singer is abruptly brought back to reality by a dry voice demanding his documents. He remembers that amidst the chaos, someone extended a helping hand, although their intentions were not genuine, as indicated by the line "Mais elle portait des gants" which means "But she was wearing gloves." This signifies that even gestures of assistance are tainted by hidden motives or lack of sincerity.
In summary, "Où Aller Où" is a song that expresses the feeling of being lost and displaced, devoid of hope and uncertain about the next step to take. It conveys the struggle for survival, the sacrifices made, and the harsh realities faced by those who are marginalized and seeking a better life.

Je ne sais pas où aller
I don't know where to go
J’ai vendu mon bateau
I sold my boat
Ici, il n'y a plus de poisson
Here, there is no more fish
Et j’ai vendu mon âme
And I sold my soul
Il n'y avait plus d’espoir
There was no hope left
J’ai vendu ma femme,
I sold my wife
Mon amour, mes enfants
My love, my children
Pour ne pas mourir à mon tour
To avoid dying myself
J’ai dormi sans étoiles
I slept without stars
Ici, le ciel est noir
Here, the sky is black

And I stole bread
La terre était trop sèche
The ground was too dry
C’est du sang qu’elle boit
It's blood that it drinks
Et nos bras qu’elle mange
And our arms that it devours
C’est la faute à qui si je suis hors-la-loi
Whose fault is it if I am an outlaw?
Et puis je suis parti
And then I left

Without a guide, without a compass
Et les cris de ma mère
And the cries of my mother
Par-dessus mon épaule
Over my shoulder
J’ai pris mon élan
I gathered momentum
Une fois et dix fois
Once and ten times
Sauté par-dessus les grilles comme papa
Jumped over the fences like dad
Prends garde disent-il
Be careful, they say
La mer est une tombe
The sea is a grave
Elle ne te donnera pas son bras
It won't lend you its arm
Si tu tombes
If you fall
J’ai pris les vagues
I took the waves
Au milieu de la mer qui brille
In the midst of the shimmering sea
Mais elles ont fait tomber toute ma famille
But they made my entire family fall
Puis, je ne me souviens plus
Then, I don't remember anymore
J’ai été réveillé
I was awakened
Par une voix sèche
By a dry voice
Qui m’a dit « tes papiers »
Who told me, 'Your papers'
Et puis je me souviens
And then I remember
Que dans cet ouragan
That in this hurricane
On m’a tendu la main
Someone reached out to me
Mais elle portait des gants
But they were wearing gloves
