My Jesus
Todd Agnew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Which Jesus do you follow?
Which Jesus do you serve?
If Ephesians says to imitate Christ,
Why do you look so much like the world?

Cause my Jesus bled and died
He spent His time with thieves and liars
He loved the poor and accosted the arrogant
So which one do you want to be?

Blessed are the poor in spirit
Or do we pray to be blessed with the wealth of this land
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness
Or do we ache for another taste of this world of shifting sand

Cause my Jesus bled and died for my sins
He spent His time with thieves and sluts and liars
He loved the poor and accosted the rich
So which one do you want to be?

Who is this that you follow?
This picture of the American dream
If Jesus was here would you walk right by on the other side
Or fall down and worship at His holy feet
Holy, yeah...

Pretty blue eyes and curly brown hair and a clear complexion
Is how you see Him as He dies for your sins
But the Word says He was battered and scarred
Or did you miss that part?
Sometimes I doubt we'd recognize Him

Cause my Jesus bled and died
He spent His time with thieves and the least of these
He loved the poor and accosted the comfortable
So which one do you want to be?

Cause my Jesus would never be accepted in my church
The blood and dirt on His feet might stain the carpet
But He reaches for the hurting and despises the proud
and I think He'd prefer Beale St. to the stained glass crowd
And I know that He can hear me if I cry it out loud

I want to be like my Jesus
I want to be like my Jesus
I want to be like my Jesus (hey yeah)
I want to be like my Jesus (oh oh ohhhh)

Not a posterchild for American prosperity, but like my Jesus
You see I'm tired of living for success and popularity
I want to be like my Jesus but I'm not sure what that means to be like You Jesus

Cause You said to live like You, love like You but then You died for me
Can I be like You Jesus?

I want to be like you Jesus
I want to be like my Jesus

Overall Meaning

Todd Agnew's song "My Jesus" is a thought-provoking commentary on the contradictions between the teachings of Jesus Christ and the values of American society. The lyrics question the authenticity of Christianity amongst those who identify as followers of Jesus, but reflect more of the world than the Lord they claim to worship.

The song opens with a series of questions, begging Christians to examine their life and beliefs: "Which Jesus do you follow? Which Jesus do you serve? If Ephesians says to imitate Christ, Why do you look so much like the world?" Agnew then urges listeners to consider the true nature of Jesus Christ, as He is portrayed in the Bible; a man who spent His time with "thieves and liars," loved "the poor and accosted the arrogant," and was "battered and scarred."

The song highlights the disconnect between the American Dream and the teachings of Christ, specifically the emphasis placed on material wealth in American society. Agnew reminds listeners of the beatitudes, encouraging them to strive towards spiritual wealth rather than material wealth. He sings, "Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness Or do we ache for another taste of this world of shifting sand."

"My Jesus" culminates with a powerful proclamation in the chorus as Agnew declares, "I want to be like my Jesus." He acknowledges that it is a difficult task, but the reward is worth it. By striving to be like Jesus, Christians can become a "poster child for American prosperity," but rather a defender of the disenfranchised and oppressed.

I love this song, I love this video. You did a fantastic job. This song gives me chills every time I hear it. The lord be praised cause my Jesus died for me. May we never forget that.

@chrissyifyify

I'm crying tears of joy for the fact that Jesus died for me & loves me no matter what. & these are tears of sadness because I realize how selfish I am. I hate how I wont go out of my way to help someone else because it might cost me or how I'm afraid to be seen with certain people at school because of my reputation. But I love how this song explains to me that I need to be like Jesus & put those things aside & suffer for all the people of the world.

@lorensanders8501

I MUST listen to this song several times a year - no song says it better - and no matter where I am in my walk with Christ when I hear it...it still reaches deeply enough to bring me to tears and sets me to praying...
