Bang On The Drum All Day
Todd Rundgren Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Alright, are we ready now?)

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day

Ever since I was a tiny boy
I don't want no candy
I don't need no toy
I took a stick and an old coffee can
I bang on that thing 'til I got blisters on my hand because

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (yes I do)
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (that's right)

When I get older they think I'm a fool
The teacher told me I should stay after school
She caught me pounding on the desk with my hands
But my licks was so hot
I made the teacher want to dance
And that's why

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (hey, why not?)
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (I just wanna bang now)

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (I can bang that sucker)
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (listen to this)

Every day when I get home from work
I feel so frustrated
The boss is a jerk
And I get my sticks and go out to the shed
And I pound on that drum like it was the boss's head
Because

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (bang, bang)
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (I could bang that drum)

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (hey, hey)
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (but this is why I bang that drum)

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (hey, you want to take a bang at it?)
I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (hey, hey)

I don't want to work
I want to bang on the drum all day (bang, bang)

I don't want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day (I could do this all day)

Overall Meaning

The song "Bang the Drum All Day" by Todd Rundgren is an anthem to those who dislike their jobs and would rather spend their days doing what they love: banging on a drum. Rundgren expresses his passion for drumming and how he would rather do that than work for a living. He reminisces about his childhood when he used to bang on anything he could find and still loves doing it to this day. Even when he's frustrated with work, he can go home and relieve his stress by pounding on the drums. The message of the song is that we should all do what makes us happy, despite what others think or say.

The lyrics of the song use repetitive phrases such as "I don't want to work" and "I just want to bang on the drum all day" to emphasize the desire to do something fun instead of working. The song also uses humor in the lines "I get my sticks and go out to the shed/And I pound on that drum like it was the boss's head" to show how drumming can relieve stress and anger. Additionally, Rundgren uses rhyming and alliteration throughout the song to make it catchy and memorable.

Todd is a wizard who doesn't get the recognition he should. Look back at some of his older music from the '70s and you can see the genius in him. Plus he plays almost all instruments I hope he gets in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you deserves to be right up there with the best.

And Grand Funk Railroad my fellow Michigander's. Had the honors of having Todd, producing their WE ARE AN AMERICAN BAND, album

@@jamespeterson2128 And many others . One of the reasons he gives for making such great music is that he became a sound tech and producer . Nice little bit in the New Yorker about that . Todd credited his income from producing records for others for his personal freedom to make his own music . Bang on the Drum paid very well . He never did get why ATT never used "Hello It's Me "
