Highway to Hell
Tom Morello Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing that I'd rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too

I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell

No stop signs, no speed limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me around
Hey, Satan, paying my dues
Playing in a rocking band
Oh, hey, mama, look at me
I'm on the way to the promised land
I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell

Don't stop me

I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell
Highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell
Highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell

I'm on a highway to hell
I'm on a highway to hell

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC explore the idea of living life on the edge and taking risks. The opening lines of the song, "Living easy, living free / Season ticket on a one-way ride / Asking nothing, leave me be / Taking everything in my stride" suggest a carefree, rebellious attitude that is uninhibited by outside pressures or responsibilities. The lyrics also express a sense of defiance towards authority and societal norms, as the singer declares that they don't need "reason, don't need rhyme."

However, the lyrics soon take a dark turn as the singer reveals that they are "on a highway to hell." This could be interpreted as a metaphor for a self-destructive lifestyle or a journey towards damnation. The lyrics "Hey, Satan, paying my dues / Playing in a rocking band" suggest that the singer is aware of the risks of their lifestyle and is willing to pay the price for their choices. The lyrics "I'm on the way to the promised land" could be viewed as the singer's belief that living a wild, rebellious life is worth the potential consequences.

Overall, "Highway to Hell" is a song that celebrates rebellion, risk-taking, and living life on one's own terms, but also acknowledges the potential dangers and consequences of such a lifestyle.

Bruce as awesome as ever...he still has control of his voice and range. And of course Tom M. Still reflects the legend he created from raw talent...it doesn't get any better. Love and Light always. 💕

Damn! Super Group right here! Love Springsteen and The Night Watchman!

@christianmiksche3937

Its not the first time they did this song together, It was in Australia, a Bruce Tour with Morello on Guitars, Eddie as Special Guest and Highway to Hell as opener of the Show

@jasontomerini6340

Yeah true story mate. On top of that , this version appears to be a stripped back recording of that concert with the crowd cut out and a bit of sound edit. If you watch the vid of Springsteen's concert it sounds pretty much identical. Having said that , I still love it 🤙
