My husband and I danced to this song at our wedding many years ago. We love Tom Waits, and felt this song said so much more than words could.

Josh Josh

Don't freak, but DO. It's a Stroh violin captured with a ribbon mic, with the horn at a distance of around 4ft . And not a totally isolated track. It's live in the same room as the mallets and Tom's piano. The bass clarinet and main upright bass (there's a mash of two upright string bass tracks here) are close mic-ed in a separate room. The Stroh is a LOUD instrument, and the playing here is so delicate and gentle; it sounds like a scratchy old Victrola because it functions in a similar way. A metal/tin diaphragm pushing movement into a conical resonator and out a horn. You're hearing the breathing/wheezing of the instrument and the rosined bow as much as the notes. It's entirely "acoustic" in the same way a trumpet is acoustic, but if you've ever seen or heard (or tried to play) one in person, it's also very alien and "mechanically" acoustic. It's an oddball, unwieldy instrument, but sooo GORGEOUS here.

Thanks for the info. I'd always wondered.

Dawn Harms played the Stroh on this record, right? Not Carla?

Hi, Josh! For reference, I’m a violinist who also plays Stroh, and to me, this sounds a lot more like false harmonics played on a regular violin than either my Stroh, or Carla’s gorgeous old trumpet violin (which also has distinctly different sound, at least to me)!

Matthew Saul

@Meredith Yayanos I always thought it sounded like harmonics as well. I'm not a violin player but that's what it sounds like to me.

Thank you, Josh! Is this all from analysis or were you/know someone who was involved? Tom Waits' recordings are so atmospheric, he seems like a master of capturing the essence of a room in recordings. Like he treats the room as much like an instrument and the instruments themselves. So beautiful. Somehow the violin sounded stereo to me, if only just barely, but perhaps that's bleed through?

I've never heard a more beautiful song that could make me feel happy, angry, and sad all at the same time.

This was such a gorgeous song. I love Tom Waits so much and when this came on my Spotify, I instantly thought of him. I know it sounds dramatic but after the initial shock, I replayed it and actually shed a few tears. There's only a few songs that evoke that kind of emotion out of me, and this is one of them.

Even when Tom says nothing, he says it better than everyone else.
