Sea Of Love
Tom Waits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come with me my love to the sea
The sea of love
I want to tell you
How much I love you
I'm drowning in a sea of love

Do you remember the night we met?
That's the night I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you
I'm drowning in a sea of love

Come with me to the sea

Do you remember the night we met?
That's the night I just knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you
I'm down in a sea of love

Come with me to the sea

Do you remember the night we met?
That's the night I just knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you
I'm down in a sea of love

Come with me to the sea

Do you remember the night we met?
That's the night I just knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you
I'm down here in a sea of love

Come with me to the sea

Come with me my love to the sea
The sea of love
I want to tell you
How much I love you
I'm down here in a sea of love

Come with me to the sea

Overall Meaning

Tom Waits's song Sea of Love is a beautiful love song that metaphorically portrays love as a vast, endless sea. The opening lines of the song, "Come with me my love to the sea, the sea of love," are an invitation to the singer's beloved to come and join him in the "sea of love." He wants to express to her how much he loves her, but the weight of his emotions is causing him to feel like he is drowning in this sea of love.

The singer fondly reminisces about the night he and his beloved met, and how he immediately understood that she was "his pet." This term of endearment shows the affection and fondness he has for her. He continues to express his feelings for her, saying, "I want to tell you how much I love you." The repetition of this line throughout the song emphasizes the depth of his feelings. The final verse establishes a sense of urgency and desperation, as the singer expresses that he is "down here in a sea of love" and pleads with his love to come with him to the sea.

Overall, Waits uses beautiful metaphors and imagery to portray the depth and intensity of love. The song's peaceful melody combined with the passionate lyrics creates an intimate and romantic atmosphere.

@musik102 Hmm. There's a Waits tune - Just the Right Bullets that I believe you'd like.
Also, theres a straight up blues tune from an album called Frank's Wild Years called Cold Cold Ground which was the crossing point I believe for his voice.
I think that your 'rules' about singing voice are fair enough as an opinion - but dont stand scrutiny as a measure of what is 'phoney'.
There are several objections - lets just deal with one or two here - for size.

My opinion is that the fake voices of the autotune and synthesiser pop songs are the phoneys.

What about Antony and the Johnsons, is that also too mannered for you? Or opera?
Or those falsetto singers?
I believe that some songwriters aren't blessed with the voice of a Teddy Pendergrass or a Ray Charles.
They have to manage a delivery of the lyric within the limitation of their tubes.
Also clean and pure voices dont work as well as dirty ones in certain kinds of music.

Sammy Davis jnr and Tom Jones had pipes for singing - but nothing was more absurd than their attempts in rock music.

Tom Waits was at the time of Franks Wild Years a heavy smoker, drinker and a user of certain powders. I don't doubt that singing 'straight' was going to become a problem for him.
Emotional content always Requires some stretching and contortion of the voice anyway - do you believe that that whole genre of soul music always involved 'natural' singing?
Of course not.
It's just a question of authenticity and quality of the voice as part of the musical ensemble. Does it work?
I believe that for Tome Waits it does completely.
Id rather listen to him than a thousand autotuned and synthesised perfect tones.
This form of 'emoting' in a singing voice goes all the way back to Charley Patton and Blind Willie.
As a last objection - do you also object to the voice of Skip James? Or Robert Johnson?
Do you consider them Phoney too? (!)
They didnt sing 'natural' either.
You should use your words more carefully. None of these artists were phoney.

@musik102 All singing is 'mannered' in some way. This kind of voice has a long history in jazz and the blues.
For example Louis Armstrong and Howlin Wolf and all the way back to Blind Willie Johnson and Son House.
There is also a long history of pianists who accompanied their playing with growling and grunting - Oscar Peterson and Earl Hines come to mind for that.
One of the most famous blues songs that exists - Dark was the night, cold was the ground - has no lyrics but a powerful vocal one might characterise as a kind of moaning.
The question is whether the music rings true, or whether like most commercial music it is totally contrived and the emotions expressed just a kind of fakery.
I think you'd have to be pretty idiotic/ignorant to describe Waits (or the bluesmen/jazzmen) as not authentic.
He lived the life of a journeyman pianist and songwriter for 40 odd years and never made or tried to make a hit record.
He's as real as it gets. The voice complements the music.
Jimi Hendrix wasnt a great singer either - except of his own songs. Same thing.
