Alone
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone, alone with a sky of romance above
Alone, alone on a night that was meant for love
There must be someone waiting
Who feels the way I do
Who ever you are, are you, are you
Alone, alone on this night that we two could share
Alone, alone with your kiss that could make me care
And when you come I'll promise to be your very own
Alone, alone with a heart meant for you alone

Overall Meaning

Tommy Dorsey's song Alone is a beautiful representation of someone longing for their companion. The opening lyrics, “Alone, alone with a sky of romance above” puts forth an image of someone alone under the stars, with a hopeful expectation for a companion's arrival. The lyrics continue in the same vein, with the singer clearly identifying that they have someone in mind as their intended companion. The repetition of the word “alone” in each verse represents a sense of longing and yearning for connection with this person, while the lyrics also portray the hope and promise of finding that person soon.

The singer addresses an unknown person who could be their companion, telling them: “There must be someone waiting, who feels the way I do / Whoever you are, are you, are you.” This question marks a turning point in the song, with the intention firmly set towards meeting the long-awaited companion. The lyrics are full of vulnerability and honesty, which make this a very powerful song.

In the chorus, the singer speaks directly to their companion, saying “And when you come, I'll promise to be your very own / Alone, alone with a heart meant for you alone.” The sweetness of these lyrics further complements the sense of longing and deep emotions portrayed in the song.

I am curious about these record labels. Some say "not licensed for radio broadcast." Did radio stations have to buy special recordings? If so, why? Also, why are so many records subtitled in Spanish? Were these purchased outside the U.S.? Finally, are all these records in someone's private collection? If that is the case, what a beautiful treasure to have at your disposal.

I have also wondered about this. But I have heard that radio stations had to buy special radio transcriptions of the tunes.
