Just As Though You Were Here
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll wake each morning, and I'll promise to laugh
I'll say good morning to your old photograph
And I'll speak to you, dear
(Just as though you were here)

When purple shadows start to welcome the dark
I'll take the same old stroll we took through the park
And I'll cling to you, dear
(Just as though you were here)

(Oh, don't be afraid that distance and time)
Will finally tear us apart
(The farther you go, the longer you stay)
(The deeper you grow in my heart)

Each night before I wander off into sleep
I'll bring to light the tears I've buried so deep
Then I'll kiss you, my dear
(Just as though you were here)

Each night before I wander off into sleep
I'll bring to light the tears I've buried so deep
Then I'll kiss you, my dear

And though you're gone, my love for you goes on, darling
(Just as though you were here)

Overall Meaning

Tommy Dorsey's song "Just As Though You Were Here" is a beautiful piece about coping with the absence of a loved one. The lyrics indicate a promise to continue living each day despite the pain of separation. The singer promises to wake every morning and greet an old photograph of their loved one, and even speak to them "just as though you were here." The singer also promises to take their old stroll through the park as if their loved one is still with them, clinging to them tightly. This is a way of keeping the memory of their loved one close and cherishing the moments they shared together.

The lyrics also suggest that even though the loved one is far away, their memory and love never diminish. The singer believes that distance and time won't tear them apart, and as they grow "deeper" in their heart, their love will only strengthen. However, the singer cannot help but let their emotions show, and each night before they fall asleep, they will bring to light the tears they've buried so deep, and kiss their loved one "just as though you were here." Even though the loved one is gone, the singer's love for them will continue, as if they never left.

In summary, "Just As Though You Were Here" is a song about dealing with the pain of separation from a loved one. It shows how memories and love can help one cope with the absence of someone special. Despite being apart, the love stays strong and true, and their memory is always cherished.

Sinatra wanted more money, Dorsey said no and a gangster called Willie Moretti is said to have threatened to kill Dorsey in his dressing room if he did not free Sinatra from his contract with the band.
