It’s All in the Game
Tommy Edwards Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many a tear has to fall but it's all in the game
All in the wonderful game that we know as love
You have words with him and your future's looking dim
But these things your hearts can rise above

Once in a while he won't call but it's all in the game
Soon he'll be there at your side with a sweet bouquet
And he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips
And your hearts will fly away

(Soon he'll be there at your side) with a sweet bouquet

Then he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips
And your hearts will fly away

Overall Meaning

The song "It's All in the Game" by Tommy Edwards is a classic love song that conveys the ups and downs of relationships. The song acknowledges that relationships are not perfect and require work, with tears falling and futures looking dim. However, despite these hardships, love is a wonderful game that is worth playing. The lyrics suggest that through perseverance, couples can overcome their troubles and strengthen their bond. The song also emphasizes the importance of patience, as sometimes partners may not be present, but they will eventually return with a sweet gesture to make up for lost time. The sweet and romantic verse about caressing fingertips and hearts flying away reinforces the idea of the highs and lows of relationships and the joy that can come from overcoming obstacles.

The song was written in 1911 by Charles Dawes and was originally an instrumental piece called "Melody in A Major." The lyrics were added to the song in 1951 by Carl Sigman, who also wrote the popular hit "What Now My Love." "It's All in the Game" has been covered by many notable artists, including Nat King Cole and Van Morrison. In 1958, Tommy Edwards recorded his version of the song, which became his biggest hit and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song's popularity led to Edwards being dubbed the "singer of the love song."

The music of this song (not the words) was written by a man named Charles Gates Dawes. If you have a thousand guesses, you won't be able to guess what he did for a living in the 1920s. He also won an award of some kind in the 1920s. You won't guess what.

Today was the anniversary of my first marriage and this song popped up on my computer. Weird. We were married on September 19th in 1959 and were married 20 years . Sitting here remembering the wonderful times we had. Beautiful song and lots of good memories.
