I Will Survive
Tony Clifton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First I was afraaaaid
I was pyoo-trified
Kept thinking I could never live
Ah, without you by my sy-eeed
But then I spent so many nights
Ah, thinking how you did me wrong
And I ... grew ... STRONG!
And I learned to get along
And now you're back
From outer space
I just walked in to find you here
With that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have asked you for the key
If I had known for just one second
You'd be back to bother me
Go on now, GO! Walk out the door!
Don't turn around now
You're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one that tried to hurt me with goodbye
Did you think I'd crum-bill
Did you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will sur-vee-heeeev
As long as i know how to love
I know I will stay a-leeeev
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
I will sur-vee-hee-heeeev!
I will sur-vee-hee-heeeev!
I will sur-veeeeeeeeeeeev!
I ... a-will ... sur-veeeeeeeeeeeeeeev!!!
Heeeey...Ah!!!
I will sur-veev!
I will sur-veev!
I will sur-veev!

I will sur-vee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-heev!
[Heavy applause...]

Overall Meaning

The song "I Will Survive" by Tony Clifton is a classic anthem of empowerment and strength. The lyrics tell the story of a person who was once afraid and dependent on someone else, but eventually learned to stand on their own two feet and became stronger as a result. The singer initially feels lost without their partner, but eventually realizes that they don't need that person to survive. The line "I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face" suggests that the partner has come back, likely hoping to reconcile, but the singer has moved on and is now stronger without them. This is echoed in the refrain "I will sur-vee-heeeev" which emphasizes the singer's determination to survive and thrive despite any obstacle in their path.

The song can be interpreted as a celebration of independence and personal growth. The singer has learned that they don't need someone else to define them or make them happy, and that they are capable of standing on their own. The reference to the "stupid lock" and the "key" suggests that the partner may have been controlling or manipulating, but the singer has taken back control of their life. The song is often interpreted as a feminist anthem, as the lyrics empower women to stand up for themselves and not rely on men for validation or security. However, the message is universal and can apply to anyone who has gone through a difficult breakup or faced adversity.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side

If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to bother me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive, hey, hey
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Kept trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
And I spent oh-so many nights just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high and you see me
Somebody new
I'm not that chained-up little person and still in love with you
And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free
Well, now I'm saving all my lovin' for someone who's loving me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye
Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive
Oh
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye
Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Andy died 40 years ago next May. I still cry when I watch this movie, every single time. I was a kid, but my uncle and I LOVED Andy Kaufman. I stayed up late and we called into the number for SNL to keep him. I never missed Taxi. We loved everything about Andy. I lived in Western Kentucky and we could get the Memphis wrestling shows with him and Larry Lawler. My uncle was at the show where he read Gatsby in its entirety. He never stooped talking about it. I tear up a little every time I hear the song. Andy and Uncle Pat ARE the memory of my childhood.
Andy is gone.
Uncle Pat is gone.
But I am still here singing their praises.
