I Ran
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know you're gonna lie to you
in your own way

Know know too well
know the chill
know She breaks
my Siren
NEVER was
one for a
prissy girl
coquette
Call in For
an Ambulance
Reach high
doesn't mean She's
holy
just means She's got a Cellular
handy
almost
Brave
almost pregnant
almost in love "VANILLA"

Deep Thoughts....

To me, boxing is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography,

and the dancers hit each
other.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tori Amos's song "I Ran" depict a complex emotional state. The song seems to be about a woman who is struggling with her own inner demons and truths. She acknowledges that she is lying to herself in her own way, likely about her own feelings or actions. The repetition of the word "know" in the second line further emphasizes her awareness and familiarity with this behavior. The line "know the chill" may suggest a sense of fear or unease that comes with this self-deception.

The line "know She breaks my Siren" is particularly intriguing as it is open to interpretation. Sirens are mythical creatures known for their alluring songs that would lead sailors to their deaths. In this context, the Siren may represent the woman's own inner voice or desires that she is ignoring or suppressing. The fact that it is being broken suggests a struggle or conflict with this inner voice.

The rest of the song includes various allusions and metaphors, such as the references to a "prissy girl" and a "coquette," which may depict societal expectations of femininity and sexuality. The line "almost Brave almost pregnant almost in love 'VANILLA'" is both cryptic and poignant, suggesting a longing for something deeper or more meaningful than the superficial labels society might put on relationships or experiences.

Overall, the lyrics of "I Ran" suggest a woman struggling with her own inner demons and attempting to navigate societal expectations and her own desires.

Man I'd love to hear her do Space Age Love Song by A Flock of Seagulls. I bet she could do an awesome piano cover of a beautiful song.

Working on a sad ukulele cover arrangement of this song. They way I read the lyrics it's a real tearjerker. This is amazingly close to how I want to hear it.

Hi David, I adore this song. The original is a classic 80's anthem by Flock of Seagulls. There are so many cover versions by a multitude of diverse artists. I wonder did you ever get around to doing a ukulele version. Might be interesting to hear.
