Wednesday
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nothing here to fear
I'm just sitting around
Being foolish when
There is work to be done
Just a hang-up call
And the quiet breathing
Of our Persian we call
Cajun on a Wednesday

So we go from year to year
With secrets we've been keeping
Though you say you're not a Templar man

Seems as if we're circling
For very different reasons
But one day the Eagle has to land

Out past the fountain
A left by the station
I start the day in the usual way
Then think -- well why not --
And stop for a coffee
Then begin to recall
Things that you say

No one's at the door
You suggest a ghost
Perhaps a phantom
I agree with this in part
Something is with us
I can't put my finger on --
Is Thumbelina size ten
On a Wednesday --

So we go from year to year
With secrets we've been keeping
Though you say you're not a Templar man

You tell me to cheer up
You suspect we're oddly even
Even still the eagle has to land

Out past the fountain
A left by the station
I start the day in the usual way
Then think -- well why not --
And stop for a coffee
Then begin to recall
Things that you say

Pluck up the courage
And snap
It's gone again
I start humming "When Doves Cry"
Can someone help me

I think that I'm Lost here
Lost in a place called America

Overall Meaning

The song "Wednesday" by Tori Amos is a melancholic reflection on life's fears, secrets, and uncertainties. The opening line "Nothing here to fear" sets a tone of comfort, yet the following lyrics reveal the singer's feelings of guilt and restlessness. The second line "I'm just sitting around" acknowledges that the singer is avoiding responsibilities, and the line "Being foolish when there is work to be done" hints at the guilt of procrastination. The line "Just a hang-up call and the quiet breathing of our Persian we call Cajun" portrays the sense of quiet that emphasizes the singer's introspection.

The second verse reveals that the song is talking about secrets that are kept year after year. The line "Though you say you're not a Templar man" indicates that the "secrets" are most probably connected to some form of religion or a secret society. The verse hints at the singer's confusion and isolation, with "Seems as if we're circling for very different reasons," suggesting a disconnect and distance between the singer and their partner.

The chorus "So we go from year to year with secrets we've been keeping" occurs twice and reinforces the idea of a longstanding burden. The verse "You tell me to cheer up, You suspect we're oddly even," reveals that the singer's partner might be trying to console the singer, but with a hint of skepticism. The final lines of the song "Can someone help me, I think that I'm lost here, lost in a place called America," show that the singer confesses that they are lost and need help.

I bought this album in college. The university was playing interviews Tori was doing to promote the album. I remember her talking about Scarlets journey and the things scarlet had been through and thought a lot of work was put into the album. So I bought it and it blew me away.
