New Beginning
Tracy Chapman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The whole world's broke and it ain't worth fixing
It's time to start all over, make a new beginning
There's too much pain, too much suffering
Let's resolve to start all over make a new beginning

Now don't get me wrong I love life and living
But when you wake up and look around at everything that's going down
All wrong
You see we need to change it now, this world with too few happy endings
We can resolve to start all over make a new beginning

Start all over
Start all over
Start all over
Start all over

The world is broken into fragments and pieces
That once were joined together in a unified whole
But now too many stand alone There's too much separation
We can resolve to come together in the new beginning

Start all over
Start all over
Start all over
Start all over

We can break the cycle - We can break the chain
We can start all over - In the new beginning
We can learn, we can teach
We can share the myths the dream the prayer
The notion that we can do better
Change our lives and paths
Create a new world

And Start all over
Start all over
Start all over
Start all over

The whole world's broke and it ain't worth fixing
It's time to start all over, make a new beginning
There's too much fighting, too little understanding
It's time to stop and start all over
Make a new beginning

Start all over
Start all over
Start all over
Start all over

We need to make new symbols
Make new signs
Make a new language
With these we'll define the world

And start all over
Start all over

Start all over
Start all over ...

Overall Meaning

In Tracy Chapman's song "New Beginning," she reflects on the state of the world and the need for a fresh start. The opening lines suggest a world that is too broken to be repaired, and therefore, it is necessary to start all over. There is too much pain and suffering, and too few happy endings. Tracy Chapman wants the people of the world to come together and make a commitment to resolving these issues starting from scratch.

She acknowledges that life is precious, but there is something fundamentally wrong with a world where people wake up every day to see everything that is wrong around them. The world has become fragmented and disconnected, leading to separation and suffering. However, she remains optimistic that a new beginning is possible if we all work together.

The song concludes on a hopeful note, where she suggests that we can break the cycle and create a new world. The new world would require new language, symbols, and signs, and they will define how the world should be. This song is a call to action to make the world a better place.

For my 7th birthday in November 1995, my Nan bought me my first radio and also my first cassette tape: New Beginnings. It was the first piece of music I owned, and Tracy Chapman became my favorite artist as a young little gay white boy from the suburbs with no artists to look up to, until then.

Well, my Nan passed away this January, and I’m thinking of her as I listen to this song and working on putting together my New Beginning life without her 😭.

Also it’s beautiful how timeless this song, message, and Tracy Chapman are. ❀️

@alimasic11

That's so cute πŸ’“ My dad loved Tracy Chapman and always had the New Beginnings cd playing in the car when I was young. I found the cd when he passed away 2 years ago, and this was the song I listened to the most - inspiring me to brave my New Beginning without him πŸ₯Ί

It's crazy to think how this song touched us both in a time of grief, around the same time. I only hope Tracy knows how special her music is ❀
& I was so excited after seeing her Grammy performance I had to come back to this song!

I am so sorry for your loss. Without a shadow of a doubt, your mother was a great woman.

@jenniferbalkin3057

I’ve had this in my CD player in the car forever. I started listening to it again a few days ago on my way to get results for a biopsy on my 28 year old daughter. She has breast cancer. I have been soothed by Tracy this past few days. Thank you.
