Born in Cleveland, Ohio,U.S., Tracy Chapman began playing guitar and writing songs as a child. She received a scholarship through A Better Chance that allowed her to attend Wooster School in Connecticut, and was eventually accepted to Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
Tracy Chapman helped restore songwriters to the spotlight in the '80s. The multi-platinum success of Chapman's eponymous 1988 debut was unexpected, and it had lasting impact. Although Chapman was working from the same confessional songwriter foundation that had been popularized in the '70s, her songs were fresh and powerful, driven by simple melodies and affecting lyrics. At the time of her first album, there were only a handful of artists performing such a style successfully, and her success ushered in a new era of songwriters that lasted well into the '90s. Along with 10,000 Maniacs and R.E.M., Chapman's liberal politics proved enormously influential on American college campuses in the late '80s.

Telling Stories
Tracy Chapman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lines on your page of memories
Write it down but it doesn't mean
You're not just telling stories
There is fiction in the space between
You and reality
You will do and say anything
To make your everyday life seem less mundane
You and me
There's a science fiction in the space between
You and me
A fabrication of a grand scheme
Where I am the scary monster
I eat the city and as I leave the scene
In my spaceship I am laughing
In your remembrance of your bad dream
There's no one but you standing
Leave the pity and the blame
For the ones who do not speak
You write the words to get respect and compassion
And for posterity
You write the words and make believe
There is truth in the space between
There is fiction in the space between
You and everybody
Give us all what we need
Give us one more sad sordid story
But in the fiction of the space between
Sometimes a lie is the best thing
Sometimes a lie is the best thing
Oh the best thing
Is the best thing
"Telling Stories" is a song about the blurry line between truth and fiction in storytelling. Tracy Chapman urges us to examine the stories we tell ourselves and others and question how much of it is based on truth and how much is just a fabrication. She argues that sometimes a lie may be the best thing to get respect, compassion, or just to make life seem less mundane. In the first verse, Chapman suggests that memories are often colored by our imagination and that what we write down as the truth may not necessarily be the whole truth.
The second verse deals with science fiction and how it can be used as an escape from reality. Chapman creates a world where she is the monster and she eats the city before leaving in a spaceship. However, this is just a bad dream, and in reality, there is no one standing other than the person who experienced it. In the chorus, Chapman emphasizes how people often tell sordid stories to others to get their sympathy or just to entertain them.
In the final verse, Chapman suggests that sometimes a lie is the best thing when it comes to storytelling. Sometimes we need to exaggerate or invent a story to get the audience's attention and make the narrative more interesting. However, she also warns that there is always truth in the space between the fiction we create.
