Through most of their career the band emphasized the use of contrasting soprano vocals and death grunt vocals, but with the release of Free Fall into Fear — in 2005 — the band switched this contrast mostly to tenor vocals and death growls, with rare soprano passages.
Kjetil Nordhus, Runar Hansen, Kjell Rune Hagen, and Jonathan Perez walked out in November 2006 due to bad organisation leading to monetary loss for all the members of the band and posted a statement on the Trail of Tears' website saying the band had split up. Ronny Thorsen soon issued a statement saying they would in fact be carrying on without them and that they couldn't have chosen a worse time to leave the band due to the upcoming tour for the album Existentia. All tour dates had to be canceled.
On February 1, 2007 it was stated that former Trail of Tears vocalist Cathrine Paulsen re-joined the band. The band was also confirmed for 2007's Sweden Rock Festival, which was then followed with an extensive North American headlining tour alongside Echoes of Eternity and Unexpect.
In August 2008, the band announced that they will enter Soundsuite Studio in Marseille, France with Terje Refsnes on November 3, 2008 to record their sixth studio album. Ronny Thorsen says that there are fourteen songs ready, with an additional four or five on the drawing board. The album was released in 2009.
The band's final album, Oscillation, was released in 2013.

Crashing Down
Trail of Tears Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hanging on with a bitter restraint
They never seemed to care that your hope was lost once more
They never seemed to care that your mind was turned to stone
Let your conviction die in their sea of lies
Treasure me 'cause I am the only hope you'll ever see
They've come to take you and drag you down
To where your fear becomes their allied
They have the power to bend the shape
Of mankinds logic into despair
They'll let indecency establish itself
In the lack of solid consent
Crawling deeper into your hole
Seeking strength to prevent your fall
You proved them wrong at last and they turned away in shame
You proved them wrong at last, let's celebrate their end
The lyrics of Trail of Tears' song "Crashing Down" present a powerful emotional narrative about the struggle of overcoming despair and rising above adversity. The lyrics suggest a feeling of betrayal and abandonment by some of those around the singer, as they never seemed to care that their hope was lost once more and their mind turned to stone. Despite this, the singer urges the listener to let their conviction die in the sea of lies, indicating a call to abandon false hope and to find strength in accepting reality.
The chorus of the song contains a juxtaposition of hope and desperation. The singer urges the listener to treasure them, stating that they are the only hope they'll ever see and that they are the one who will heal them of their disease. The listener can infer that the singer is speaking of themselves as a source of hope and healing, but at the same time, the lyrics suggest that the situation is extremely dire and that without the singer's help, the listener may be doomed.
The song continues with a shift from the first-person perspective of the singer to a more third-person perspective, as they describe those who have come to take the listener and drag them down to where their fear becomes their allied. The lyrics suggest that these individuals have the power to bend the shape of mankind's logic into despair, emphasizing how easy it is for people to give in to their darker impulses. The narration suggests that they will let indecency establish itself in the lack of solid consent.
In conclusion, "Crashing Down" presents a narrative of battling against despair, betrayal, and adversity. The lyrics suggest that those around the singer have abandoned them, but they urge the listener to let go of false hope and to find strength in accepting reality. The song continues to describe the dire situation, where others have come to take the listener and bend the shape of mankind's logic, presenting a bleak outlook. The lyrics end on a more positive note, urging the listener to celebrate their end after they have proven others wrong.
