The band was originally named NC17 but had to change their name due to some dispute with a US band of the same name. The original drummer was Morris Palter (from inception to 1997) who is now a reknowned percussionist and assistant professor of music.
The band released 5 studio albums in their time, but Greig Nori disbanded Treble Charger in 2006, ending its 14 year existence.
Greig Nori continues to work for Bunk Rock Entertainment as the manager/producer of Canadian Rock Band Sum 41.
Bill Priddle is involved with many projects post-Treble Charger, working with Broken Social Scene and Don Vail as well as releasing an album of solo material as The Priddle Concern
Trevor MacGregor was the drummer during what was the last 9 years of Treble Charger, thus making him the longest drummer to stay with them. He is now currently the drummer of Four Square.
On January 20, 2012, it was confirmed that the band will reunite (without Martin and MacGregor).
Christ Is On The Lawn
Treble Charger Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Candle lost its light
Lines begin to show
There's another kind
Listen here, it's time
Lying just below
Everything you see
'Least as much as all
The things you know
All the things you know
All the pews are gone
Dealer's wife has left today
Where she went, she wouldn't say
And Christ is on the lawn
Move your mouth the same
Just repeat the name
As if it's wrong to you
That's an odd request
Try to do what's best
When you're told it's true
Wouldn't you believe?
Someone's bound to see
Mind the shade and
Leave the rest alone
Leave the rest alone
The lyrics to Treble Charger’s “Christ Is On The Lawn” are open to interpretation but a clear theme of disillusionment with religion can be identified. The opening lines, “Lonely, more the night Candle lost its light Lines begin to show” could suggest a sense of despair, with the darkness of the night emphasizing a loss of hope. This would be consistent with the line “Shouldn't you believe everything you see 'least as much as all the things you know,” as the singer seems to be grappling with the idea of faith and what can be deemed "true".
As the song continues, the singer references the absence of churchgoers and the mysterious departure of the “dealer’s wife”, suggesting that people are losing faith in organized religion. This is further emphasized by the line “And Christ is on the lawn,” which could be interpreted as a dismissal of traditional Christian beliefs. The repeated lines “Wouldn't you believe someone's bound to see Mind the shade and leave the rest alone” could be seen as an invitation to the listener to question what they've been told, and to not blindly accept religious doctrine.
Overall, the song seems to be a commentary on the disillusionment that many people feel towards organized religion. The singer seems to be asking the listener to question what they’ve been told and to look beyond doctrine towards a more personal understanding of faith.
