The band was originally named NC17 but had to change their name due to some dispute with a US band of the same name. The original drummer was Morris Palter (from inception to 1997) who is now a reknowned percussionist and assistant professor of music.
The band released 5 studio albums in their time, but Greig Nori disbanded Treble Charger in 2006, ending its 14 year existence.
Greig Nori continues to work for Bunk Rock Entertainment as the manager/producer of Canadian Rock Band Sum 41.
Bill Priddle is involved with many projects post-Treble Charger, working with Broken Social Scene and Don Vail as well as releasing an album of solo material as The Priddle Concern
Trevor MacGregor was the drummer during what was the last 9 years of Treble Charger, thus making him the longest drummer to stay with them. He is now currently the drummer of Four Square.
On January 20, 2012, it was confirmed that the band will reunite (without Martin and MacGregor).
Stupid Thing To Say
Treble Charger Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't know what you're thinking
To illustrate my view
Allow me just a drink in some hotel bar
Where the world's not next to me
Please don't say a stupid thing to me
I can't enjoy it now
Maybe it's me
You look at me so plain
It's hard to even notice
It takes so long to explain
You don't have to know this part
Only on the words you really need
If I could speak so slowly
It's not as though you owed me that much more
It's not just what you wear
That's something altogether
I'll stay over there
When you figure out
Whether this all makes some sense
To you personally
The lyrics in Treble Charger's song Stupid Thing To Say express the difficulty in connecting with someone else, particularly when you can't seem to see eye to eye. The opening lines "I can't relate to you, I don't know what you're thinking" show a disconnect and a confusion in understanding the other person's perspective. The singer then requests a drink in a hotel bar, where they can be alone and away from the world. This implies a desire for a break from the stresses of trying to figure out what's going on in the other person's head.
The chorus "Please don't say a stupid thing to me, I can't enjoy it now, if you're so tired of you, maybe it's me" suggests a sensitivity to thoughtless comments, and a potential fear that the other person may not want to continue the relationship because of the singer's own issues. The second verse again highlights the difficulty in communication and the struggle to be understood, with the line "It takes so long to explain, you don't have to know this part, only on the words you really need". The singer seems resigned to the idea that they will have to work harder to communicate their thoughts and feelings.
The final lines "I'll stay over there when you figure out whether this all makes some sense to you personally" suggest a willingness to give the other person space to process their own feelings and evaluate the relationship. Overall, the song is a poignant expression of the difficulties of connection and communication, and the desire for understanding and clarity.
