Trentemøller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Be my picture on the wallAnd be my shadow when I callI’ll parade the monsters in my heart for youI’m gonna tear that mask off and show youwho I really amWho I really amParis at night disguised my longings before your eyesStreets were burning and I could not tellDid you see? Did you pray for me?When I was goneI sleep with one eye closedAnd my back to the wallDid you think of me at all?Did you not listen when they told you I would fallStreets were burning and I could not tellDid you see? Did you pray for me?When I was goneI slept with one eye closedAnd my back to the wallAnd I left, left it be your chase  to figure outIf moral is you thing I left you with no doubtThey said I was crazy They said Holy is the vicar and the vailBlind fools betray you with liesAnd I sayMaybe but you seam a little paleCome on let’s go dancing in the nightand I’ll show you something holy to me….

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Trentemøller's song One Eye Open are complex and offer a glimpse into the psyche of the songwriter. At the beginning of the song, the lyrics suggest that the singer wants a person to be a constant presence in their life, "be my picture on the wall, and be my shadow when I call." The singer also talks about showing this person the monsters in their heart, and tearing off the mask that hides their true self. This suggests that the singer wants someone who accepts them as they are and wants to see their true self.

The lyrics mention Paris at night, which could symbolize a time in the singer's life when they were lost or looking for something. The burning streets could represent chaos or destruction in their life, while the singer wonders if this person prayed for them while they were gone. The lyrics suggest that the singer feels isolated and vulnerable, having to sleep with one eye open and their back to the wall. They wonder if this person is thinking about them and if they have faith in them.

Later in the song, the singer mentions leaving something for the person to figure out, suggesting that they have left a puzzle or a challenge for them. They mention being called crazy and make a reference to the vicar and the veil, suggesting that people in authority are not to be trusted. The chorus then changes to an upbeat tempo, suggesting a change in mood. The singer invites the person to go dancing and promises to show them something holy to them. The song ends on a hopeful note, suggesting that the singer has found someone who accepts them for who they are.

Date I will never forget. I went alone to start my study in Leeds. Before my departure from Taipei (Taiwan) I was suffering depression, in Taipei my flatmate from UK was playing radio when he was folding origami , I overheard the song then I asked who is the singer. I looked up ever since that day before my departure I listened to it when I had shower when I was in bed. I sometimes secretly humming my favorites part of the song “They said,
holy is the vicar and the vail.
Blind fools betray you with lies.
And I say, maybe but you seam a little pale.
Come on let's go dancing in the night. And I'll show you something holy to me”...Meanwhile I was online dating a Danish guy working in California who happened to be a music artist in the past who is really into music. I sent him the song out of blue he told me it’s actually a Danish musician. And asked me to not to “sleep with one eye open” even though we know it’s a very dark humor coz we both know we both have some serious sleeping problem Lol

Then I arrived in Leeds in September 2018 in this modest area near Hyde park, surrounded by Masquer and oriental stores... I spotted “Church “ bar and the performing venue near our campus... couldn’t help myself not to walking in...

And guess what...
I saw this flyer on table “ Trentmoller , 27 Oct “

I was standing there ... all alone, a foreign student. Yorkshire is starting getting really cold, really grey and gloomy and humid.

Then I was humming quietly from Church, to Parkinson building to Hyde park to royal park road. I feel it’s sthing holy happen to me that Trentmoller come to Church to Leeds. After all I wasn’t all alone.
I have my belief sthing holy to me, and that’s what keep me going.

“They said, holy is the vicar and the vail.Blind fools betray you with lies.
And I say, maybe but you seam a little pale.Come on let's go dancing in the night. And I'll show you something holy to me”

Life back in 2018 leeds was my brightest but also darkest times.
I went back in July 2020 with my bf from Leeds. We held hands passing by Church , it was closed, stop operating as a music gig venue. I told my bf the story. Then I played the song while holding his hand all the way from church, Parkinson building , Hyde park, and royal park road...

My eyes gets wet every time when I listen to the song.

I can feel a memory being out in the city late on a cold, wet night about three years before I was actually born. This song really hits something.

@GemmaFurbank

Beautiful! The synths and vocals are superb! It has a kinda nostalgic, 80's synth feel, really nicely done.

@pinkrootintootin

Gemma Furbank I agree 100 per. This is so beautiful.

@michaelgass4321

i wanna HUG this song, 💛💙💜💚❤

@johnhills2345

Simply genius. Reaches deep into my soul and squashes it a bit before releasing the pressure. Melancholic, yet uplifting at the same time, I wanna die and live while listening to this tune.
