Songz was born Tremaine Aldon Neverson on November 28, 1984, in Petersburg, Virginia. Raised a military brat, he recognized his vocal abilities at the age of 14. Reluctant to sing, he began performing with encouragement by friends and family. Record producer Troy Taylor discovered Songz during a talent show, which led him to a record contract with Atlantic Records. After graduating from high school, Songz moved to New Jersey to begin his music career.
2004–2006: I Gotta Make It
While recording his debut album, Songz released mixtapes under the alias Prince of Virginia. He made an “answer track” to R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet”, entitled “Open the Closet”.His debut album, I Gotta Make It was released in July 2005 by Atlantic Records. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200, selling more units than his previous album, I Gotta Make It. The lead single, “Wonder Woman”, peaked at number 54 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, but failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.
The second single, “Can’t Help but Wait”, peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number two on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart; it became Songz’s highest charting debut on the Hot 100, and his first-charting R&B single on the R&B charts.[citation needed] “Can’t Help But Wait” charted at number 74 on the Billboard Pop 100 in February 2008. The third single off of “Trey Day”, “Last Time”, peaked on number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number nine on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In 2008, Songz was nominated for a BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist.

I ain't hear talkin' 'bout my girl you better not talk about your nigga"
"Hey babe"
"I don't wanna hear that shit"
"Hello?"
"Just keep rubbing my back"
"Ah"
"Hello?"
"What the fuck is-, ah, hell nah"
"Hello, Trey?"
Oh, oh, oh, oh-ah
Oh, oh-ah
Oh, oh-oh, oh, oh
She picks up the phone
In my head I know I'm wrong
I just want to know what she's heard
I'm pacing back and forth
'Cause I know that I've been caught
Trying to think of the perfect words
So I can come to her and lie right to her face
I don't know what I'm gonna say
But I know that I'm gonna say
Whatever it takes
I'ma run to her and lie right to her face
I don't know what I'm gonna say
But I know that I'm gonna say
Whatever it takes
Time is not on our side
'Cause she's waving goodbye goodbye
'Cause she's waving goodbye goodbye
Smartphones, dumb shit
Never knew I call so if she heard it all
I'm all out of luck tonight
I can say it was a joke but who am I kidding she ain't slow
Only way to make it right
Is if I come to her and lie right to her face
I don't know what I'm gonna say
But I know that I'm gonna say
Whatever it takes
I'ma run to her and lie right to her face
I don't know what I'm gonna say
But I know that I'm gonna say
Whatever it takes (woah, I'm gonna tell you)
(Whatever it takes)
Whatever it takes (woah, I'm gonna tell you)
(Whatever it takes)
Whatever it takes (takes)
Whatever it takes
Oh, girl
Smartphones, dumb shit
Don't you wave goodbye goodbye
Smartphones, dumb shit
Don't you wave goodbye goodbye
Smartphones, dumb shit
Oh no, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh (oh-oh-oh)
Oh man, I got to think of something
I'm about to lose it all
I swear that shit ain't really mean nothing
It started with a pocket call, call (call, call, call)
So I'ma run to her and lie right to her face
I don't know what I'm gonna say, yeah
But I know that I'm gonna say
Whatever it takes (whatever it takes)
Run to her and lie right to her face, no, no, no
I don't know what I'm gonna say (gonna say)
But I know that I'm gonna say (I'm gonna say)
Whatever it takes
Time is not on our side
'Cause she's waving goodbye goodbye
She's waving goodbye goodbye
Smartphones, dumb shit
The song "Smartphones" by Trey Songz is a story of a man caught cheating on his girlfriend through his own technological devices. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the singer's inner turmoil and guilt as he tries to come up with a way to lie to his girlfriend to cover his tracks. The use of the phone motif throughout the song highlights the dangers of modern technology and how it can be both a blessing and a curse in relationships. The lyrics "Smartphones, dumb shit" encapsulate the theme of the song perfectly.
The song opens with the line "I ain't playing I'm for real" indicating the sincerity of the singer's actions. He is not just messing around, but he admits that he has been caught and must now face the consequences. The use of dialogue throughout the song enhances the story-telling aspect of the track, and the repetitive chorus "Whatever it takes" emphasizes the lengths the singer is willing to go to make things right.
