Built to Fall
Trivium Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are the cancer spreading its wings
So selfishly unaware to the things
Resistance is fuel into my well-being
I feel my heart leaking

(You!) Start as a fissure, a crack in the skin
(You!) Become an ulcer berating
If I had known about you to
Would it be soon, what I do to you?

I don't want to hate you, but how could I not?
You killed off so much I held dear in my heart

Take away every single pain (see my pain!)
That infects each and every day (everyday!)
I will bury you once and for all
You're a monster, you're built to fall
You're built to fall!

It's getting harder and harder to breathe
Choking on the same air as the walking disease
You are the thing that's killing me
From the inside out, let me be

I don't want to hate you,
But you killed off everything in my heart

Take away every single pain (see my pain!)
That infects each and every day (everyday!)
I will bury you once and for all
You're a monster, you're built to fall

You've got your war against my head
Push that button, make it end
You've got your war against my head

You've got your war against my head
Push that button, make it end
You've got your war against my head
Push that button, make it end!

Take away every single pain (see my pain!)
That infects each and every day (everyday!)
I will bury you once and for all
You're a monster, you're built to fall

(You're built to fall! You're built to fall!)
You're built to fall

(You're built to fall! You're built to fall!)
You're built to fall

Overall Meaning

The song "Built to Fall" by Trivium is about the destructive nature of cancer, both literally and metaphorically. The first verse describes cancer as a "cancer spreading its wings" and being "selfishly unaware" of the damage it is doing. The second verse is more metaphorical, talking about how sometimes destructive forces can start small, like a "fissure, a crack in the skin" before becoming much more deadly. The chorus repeats the idea that cancer is a "monster" that needs to be "buried once and for all", and that it is "built to fall".

Ten years later, and it is still equally as badass as the band themselves.

Blaize Fire

Yeah I recently got into this band and I can say there in my top 10 bands

@Blaize Fire Ditto. Have been a huge punk and prog metal fan for years. Relatively new listener and they kick so much ass. Catching them live next time they make it to Australia for sure.

Even though he doesn't growl as much as before, Matt's voice got seriously better with time, I love the singing in this one

Wolfie_25

I remember reading an article some time back where Matt explains that the reason he did a lot of screaming and growling In Ember to Inferno and Ascendancy was because he couldn't sing very well, but after learning, he started to incorporate more clean lyrics starting with The Crusade. At least, that's how I remember it. I could be wrong. Trivium have grown so much as musicians over the years and I'm stoked for their next album!

Melody Gallagher

Omarr Guerrero you are correct. He sings now because he got a voice coach and he taught him. Talks about it in a few interviews.

Matt's change to singing the verses really helped. This song wouldn't have the creepiness, the dark, haunting angst of something like a parasite living in you. Now the shouting and screaming are more complimentary instead of accompanying which is actually better for this song and for Matt's health.

KyleJPie10

He cant sing with any sort of grit anymore. Shogun through Vengeance Falls was his best singing era. Still screams just as good as he has since Shogun though.

Lee Woodgate

Matt k. Heart is a excellent singer and guitarist

"It's getting harder and harder to breathe, choking on the same air as a walking disease" Still the best verse I've ever heard in a song.
