Drowning in Slow Motion
Trivium Lyrics

Drowning in slow motion
Drowning in slow motion

It's what I need
A place to freely bleed

All behold the bloodshed
Down upon your knees
All extol the godsend
Construction or divine

I feel there's no place left to hide
From myself, I am left behind
Drowning in slow motion
Is this fate imagined?
I feel there's no place left to hide

Taken from me
My willingness to breathe

All behold the bloodshed
Down upon your knees
All extol the godsend
Construction or divine

I feel there's no place left to hide
From myself, I am left behind
Drowning in slow motion
Is this fate imagined?
I feel there's no place left to hide

Blackened horizon
Light has withdrawn

Blackened horizon
Light has withdrawn
Blackened horizon
Light has withdrawn

I feel there's no place left to hide
From myself, I am left behind
Drowning in slow motion
Is this fate imagined?

I feel there's no place left to hide
From myself, I am left behind
Drowning in slow motion
Is this fate imagined?

I feel there's no place left to hide
From myself, I am left behind

Overall Meaning

The title of the song, "Drowning in Slow Motion" suggests the feeling of being trapped or overwhelmed by a situation and the sense of time moving too slowly in the process. The first two lines, "It's what I need, a place to freely bleed" could be interpreted as seeking an outlet to express raw emotions or finding a way to cope with pain. The following lines, "All behold the bloodshed, down upon your knees, all extol the godsend, construction or divine" hint at a world where violence or religion are valorized, yet there is a sense of uncertainty as to what forces are truly at work. This ambivalence is reinforced by the repetition of "Construction or divine".

The chorus repeats the idea of being stuck and unable to escape one's past or present circumstances, as well as a feeling of suffocation: "Taken from me my willingness to breathe". The bridge reinforces the bleakness of the situation, with the repeated "Blackened horizon, light has withdrawn" evoking a sense of hopelessness and despair. The song ends with a final repetition of the chorus, leaving the listener with the impression of being caught in a loop, unable to break free.
