Manic Frustration
Trouble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Child`s first trip away from home
Instant communication shown - no one knows
Ringing in my ear must be the phone
Pick my brain down to the bone - no one home

[Chorus]
Body touches are so cold
Someone saved her sweet soul
Tell me which way the river flows
Will you still love me when I`m old

Lifeline says I`m already dead
Open the window above my bed
I've been mislead
Dark crystals turn a shade of blood-red
From my feet to my head
I`m already dead

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Trouble's song "Manic Frustration" are rich in metaphorical language, conveying feelings of confusion, loneliness, and despair. The song seems to describe a person's first trip away from home, perhaps to pursue a dream, but who is struggling with the weight of their own thoughts and the lack of connection to others. The lines "Instant communication shown - no one knows / Ringing in my ear must be the phone / Pick my brain down to the bone - no one home" suggest a sense of alienation and isolation, as if the character is trying to reach out to others but no one is there to listen.

The chorus of the song repeats the idea that the character feels alone and disconnected from others, stating that "Body touches are so cold / Someone saved her sweet soul / Tell me which way the river flows / Will you still love me when I'm old." These lines suggest that physical touch and emotional connection are lacking, and that the character feels lost and unsure about their future.

The second verse continues to explore the character's sense of disconnection and disillusionment, stating that "Lifeline says I'm already dead / Open the window above my bed / I've been mislead / Dark crystals turn a shade of blood-red / From my feet to my head / I'm already dead." These lines suggest that the character feels trapped and hopeless, and that they are struggling to find a way out of the darkness that surrounds them.

The whole band was amazing on this album... I went to see Cathedral one time in the nineties, and Barry Stern was playing drums for them... the drum track here is phenomenal.
Pretty sure Mike Smail was on drums one other time I saw Cathedral...
