Such an important topic. Trust has been declining in the US since the 1870s. It went up after the great depression, but has declined steadily since. Individualism has destroyed trust. Lack of trust produces paranoia, and conspirisy thinking. Interestingly, trust is high in collectivistic countries, and especially in the Nordic countries. They have greater wealth, more time off of work, free education and healthcare, and much higher wellbeing. Cynicism, is having very little trust. Beimg cynical is distasterous for ones health, according to the research. Therefore, it is no surprise that life expectancy is declining in the US, and increasing almost everywhere else.

Reputations
Revenge (fear of revenge) = altruism (ensure cooperation in the future)
Show them we are willing to care and be vulnerable (embarrassing stories, the waiter recommend cheaper+better option)

In the distant past when things were very different and we lived as we have for 90%+ of the time we've been around it was easier because of transparency and accountability living in small groups where you are only ever going to know 50 people knew them intimately and were closely related and you relied on each one of them and their cooperation to survive. There was no privacy and I'm sure very little modesty when we lived in communal dwellings and very little secrets, lies, or deception because if you were expelled from the group because of a breach of trust that was like a death sentence as you wouldn't last long on your own.

Trust much like respect is earned and not owed and typically you have to be willing to give it in order to get it so it's not an entitlement you get for existing for many years in the case of respect so I think leading by example is key and in the case of trust when there's hesitation on both sides a leap of faith might be required before reciprocation can occur

I think people that want to be trusted, act trustworthy. No one trusts someone lying to them. No one trusts someone giving them a hard time. No one trusts people that talk about them or spread their business. No one trusts someone who can't be there for them. No one trusts someone who doesn't have time for you.... TRUST is created through connection and respect. I know I don't !!!!
