Sarah
Tyler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you sent a raid out, a raid on me
Well tell me that it takes two
To come in secretly
Take 'em out and end all, end all to be
Tell me are you waiting for someone like me

The honest truth is it is me
Oh Sarah don't you know
That there's something
There's something to being alone
Oh Sarah don't you go
Cause I'm nothing
I'm nothing on my own

If you sent a raid out, a raid on me
Well tell me that it takes two
To come and rescue me

Now, you can take it on the road
You can take it over high
You could bring it down
To make it on your own
You've been taking it hard
You should take it slow

Cause the honest truth is it is me
Oh Sarah don't you know
That there's something
There's something to being alone
Oh Sarah don't you go
Cause I'm nothing
I'm nothing on my own

And don't you know I'm nothing
I'm nothing on my own
Oh Sarah don't you go
There's something, there's something
To being alone
Oh Sarah don't you go

Cause I'm nothing
I'm nothing on my own

Overall Meaning

In "Sarah" Tyler sings about the fear of being alone and the struggle to maintain one's dignity and sense of self-worth when in a relationship. The first verse seems to be a plea for Sarah to be honest with him and to tell him that she needs him as much as he needs her. He fears that she will abandon him, and it seems that this fear is not unfounded. The chorus repeats the hook, "Oh Sarah don't you know, that there's something to being alone. Oh Sarah don't you go, cause I'm nothing, I'm nothing on my own."

The second verse reinforces these themes and adds to them. Tyler sings, "You can take it on the road, you can take it over high, you could bring it down, to make it on your own." Here, he seems to be acknowledging that Sarah is capable of living without him, but he still struggles with feelings of inadequacy and fears that he will not be able to make it without her. The finality of the line "I'm nothing on my own" drives home this point.

Several interpretations of this song are possible, but one could argue that "Sarah" is about the difficulty of managing one's independence while in a relationship. Tyler expresses his fear of being alone, but he also recognizes that being in a relationship can be limiting and that it can sometimes feel suffocating. Ultimately, the song is a plea for honesty, independence, and self-confidence.
