Black No. 1
Type O Negative Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And boy, I found her
She's in love with herself
She likes the dark
On her milk-white neck
The Devil's mark
The moon is full
But will she trick or treat?
I bet she will
She will
(Happy Halloween, baby)
She's got a date at midnight
With Nosferatu
Oh baby, Lily Munster
Ain't got nothing on you
Well, when I called her evil
She just laughed
Well, cast that spell on me
Boo bitch-craft
Yeah, you wanna go out cause it's raining and blowing
You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing
Dye 'em black
Ooh, dye 'em black
Black, black, black, black number one
Black, black, black, black number one
Little wolf-skin boots
And clove cigarettes
An erotic funeral
For which she's dressed
Her perfume smells like
Burning leaves
Every day
Is Halloween
Yeah, you wanna go out cause it's raining and blowing
You can't go out cause your roots are showing
Dye 'em black
Ooh, dye 'em black
Black, black, black, black number one
(She dyes 'em black)
Black, black, black, black number one
(Black number one)
Loving you
Loving you
Love, loving you
Was like loving the dead
Loving you
Loving you
Love, loving you
Was like loving the dead
Loving you was like loving the dead
Loving you was like loving the dead
Loving you was like loving the dead
Was like loving the dead
Was like loving the dead
Was like loving the dead
Sacre bleu
Loving you
Loving you
Love, loving you
Was like loving the dead
(It was like fucking the dead)
Loving you was like loving the dead
Loving you was like loving the dead
Loving you was like loving the dead
Was like loving the dead
Loving you, loving you
Loving you, loving you
Loving you, loving you
Was like loving the dead
Was like loving the dead
Was like loving the dead
Black, black, black, black number one
(She dyes 'em black)
Black, black, black, black number one
(Black number one)
Ooh yeah
Black, black, black, black number one
Black, black, black, black number one
The lyrics of Type O Negative's song Black No. 1 are an unconventional tribute to a woman who is in love with herself and the darkness. The singer describes her pale white neck with what he believes is the Devil's mark on it, as they encounter each other on Halloween. The woman is dressed as a witch, and she has a date at midnight with Nosferatu, the vampire from the classic 1922 movie by the same name. The singer tries to insult her by calling her evil, but she takes it as a compliment and casts a spell on him using "Boo Bitch Craft."
The song also touches on the idea of appearances vs. reality, with the singer describing the woman's fake wolf skin boots and clove cigarettes, as well as her perfume that smells like burning leaves. He notes that every day is Halloween for her, and by the end of the song, he likened loving her to loving someone who is dead. The lyrics are laced with sarcasm, humor, and an unorthodox romanticism, making this song memorable, controversial, and enduring.

@Ssgrandmaster
The iconic Peter Steele eye roll. Type O Negative is such an underrated band. This is true '90's goth rock.
@victorialipscomb7060
@Mariana D'Amelio layne had the best voice I’ve ever heard in my opinion, so raw and truly tortured
@jjt1093
Not underrated it took a certain group of grunge and Early goth listeners to Remember this such as myself, most modern Goth bands took there influence from this EPIC band
@Jerseyboondocks
Peter didn't like it to be called Goth. I know it does seem like it is but Peter was not a "goth"
He and the other members said they considered themselves just some dudes from Brooklyn who played doom type metal. Or something similar he said. They mentioned many times how they are not Goths.
They are a metal band
