Could I Forget You
Tyrone Davis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I guess this is the end of the line
My mind is completely made up
Oh, because only a fool would say
Knowing one day he might get hurt

But even when things for me
Was looking bad
Girl, I held my head up high

And then I asked myself
(Then I asked myself)
And then I asked myself
(Then I asked myself)

Could I forget you if I really tried
Or would I be loving you
Until the day I die

Oh, it seems like only yesterday
You said you loved me
But, girl, you went and hurt me
Over and over, yeah

Oh, but deep down inside
I know that I would lose your
Sweet loving in the end

But I plowed all my pride
Deep in my pocket
As I dried my tear filled eyes
And then I asked myself
(Then I asked myself)
And then I asked myself
(Then I asked myself)

Could I forget you if I tried
Or would I be loving you
Until the day I die

What you trying to do to me, baby
Oh, I love you
Don't do this to me, baby

Girl, you made me change my mind
You even made me
Turn back the hands of time

But I'll be right here
Holding on for your sweet loving, baby

All you got to do is tell me
That the waiting is not is vain

Overall Meaning

In the song "Could I Forget You?" by Tyrone Davis, the artist expresses his emotional confusion as he debates whether or not he can forget a former lover. He begins by acknowledging that he knows he needs to end things because he doesn't want to get hurt, but he's unsure whether he can actually let go of his feelings. Even though things were looking bad between them, Davis held his head up high at the prospect of moving on. He then poses the question to himself: Could he forget his former lover if he really tried? Or would he be stuck loving her until the day he dies? He reminisces about the past, thinking back to the time when she said she loved him, but ultimately chose to hurt him repeatedly. The artist knows that he will ultimately lose her sweet love, but he tries to bury his pride and hide his tears. Despite all of this, he remains loyal to her and is willing to wait for her sweet loving.

The lyrics of this song are easy to relate to as everyone has experienced a difficult decision in a romantic relationship. Davis's lyrics discuss the struggle of holding on or letting go, something that we've all experienced at some point in our lives. He evokes emotions of hurt, pain, confusion, and desperation, which make this song heartbreaking but also relatable. His voice tone throughout this song reinforces his emotions, bringing out the pain and hurt he has within him.

Additionally, the song has a melodic rhythm and blues feel to it that encapsulates the mood and aura of uncertainty and despair. His ability to evoke emotion through his lyrics and vocal delivery is what makes this song a classic.

Tyrone Davis is the perfect man of my dreams, my secret admirer and a very good friend of mine and I love this song In The Mood and it's one of the sexiest quiet storm bedroom ballads of all time. That song makes me want to get a little sexy tonight and I like to slow dance to the slinky and seductive melody by the romantic candle lights that ignites the sensual seduction in the nighttime. And best of all, I like to feel the sultry heat of the fire burning very hot with Tyrone Davis and my body has been yearning for love and smooth passion at the stroke of twelve at midnight. RIP Tyrone Davis. Keep on singing up there in soul heaven with the late Luther Vandross, Freddie King, Jackie Wilson, Major Harris and of course, the late
R&B/soul star Teddy Pendergrass.
